Is this even possible?
« on: October 17, 2013, 09:42:37 am »
Before I start, let me state that I am MUCH less than a beginner. In fact, if you happened to see my other thread, I haven't even yet begun, except for a lot of reading (LOTS) and a few visits to the local temple.

But as i become more aware of things, like meditation, it seems that I may be ahead of myself.  OK, I'll just spill it. I think I MAY be fairly natural at meditation. Like I can sit for 3-4 hours silently with a completely empty mind. I realize I don't even really know what I'm talking about, and the occasional thought may breeze through my mind during that period, but i find that meditation comes easier to me than I thought it would. I expected it to be much harder. Or, am I just such a neophyte I don't know what the heck I'm talking about?

It's often said that meditation is based on the premise that the natural state of the mind is calm, which seems to imply that meditation would come more "natuarally" to a person with a calmer mind to begin with, but there's also an opinion among psychotherapists that it might have a lot to do with whether the practitioner is an introvert or an extravert.

Here's an interesting article about this aspect:

Hi, RKO, welcome to FreeSangha. As for you status as a beginner. :gawrsh: The longest journey begins with but a single step.
What Makes an Elder? :
A head of gray hairs doesn't mean one's an elder. Advanced in years, one's called an old fool.
But one in whom there is truth, restraint, rectitude, gentleness,self-control, he's called an elder, his impurities disgorged, enlightened.
-Dhammpada, 19, translated by Thanissaro Bhikkhu.
