Title: Conflicted about which school. Accessibility issues
Post by: meg96green on October 18, 2018, 04:49:29 pm
 Hello
My question today is regarding the New Kadampa Tradition. I have been intrested in following a Buddhist way of life for a while now, and after doing some reading and meditation at home I have decided that I would like to join a buddhist school/group to deeper my understanding. From my reading I mostly gravitate towards the Theravada school. However, I live in a rural area and my nearest Theravada centre is over 2 hours away. Which is fine from time to time, but alot of the courses they teach are every week. I have a buddhist temple very close to me, which is actually the headquarters for The New Kadampa Tradition. Logistically, this is perfect for me because I would be able to attend the weekly classes. However, I have heard alot of negative press associated with this buddhist school, which is why I have given it a wide birth so far. Can anybody give me some guidance on this school? What in peoples opinion should i do for the best? Ive heard alot of people say the NKT is alot like a cult and a misguided school, which really worries me.
Thanks in advance

My suggestion would be to ask those who have belonged to this organization.

A brief internet search will reveal background about any controversy:

Hello meg96green,

Its worth noting that their teacher and the organisation both appear on a list of "Controversial 'Buddhist' teachers and groups"

http://viewonbuddhism.org/controversy-controversial-teacher-group-center-questionable.html (http://viewonbuddhism.org/controversy-controversial-teacher-group-center-questionable.html)

and there's also a "New Kadampa Survivors Group" on the internet.

https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/newkadampasurvivors/info (https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/newkadampasurvivors/info)

If you are interested in Theravada then perhaps you could contact the nearest Theravada centre and ask if they have a distance learning programme, or a study group nearer to where you live.
