Guided meditation
« on: May 28, 2014, 08:41:39 am »
How do people feel about it? Recorded audio files, apps or classes, they seem to be everywhere.

There is plenty of 'think yourself thin in your sleep for only $999', but these are not what I'm asking about.

Genuinely well researched, well presented, well meaning guided meditation, how do you feel about it? Is it as beneficial as other practices? Is it harmful? Is it "not Buddhist enough"?

I have found that one particularly well designed guide has helped me (a beginner) to meditate at times when I would otherwise struggle. And after a guided meditation, I am calm and concentrated enough to get onto my usual practice. I've been using it as a preparation and an emergency mindfulness anchor, but I wonder if it has other benefits. I seem to come to insights just as often through guided meditation as I do in my normal meditation.

What do you think? Is this a real part of long term progress, a set of training wheels, or a barrier to progress?
