Just Sharing ... A Poem
« on: October 10, 2011, 05:52:25 am »
If you strip Buddhism of its main tenets --
The Four Noble Truths, The Eight-fold Path --
Prajna, Sila, and Samadhi --
And steadfastly ignore, deride or obscure
Talk of the Three Marks of Existence --
Anicca, Dukkha, and Anatta --
And if you deny the relevance of scripture,
And insist on the validity of your own gibberish,
You make a nonsense of all that we strive for here.

Newcomers to the Dharma deserve our kind consideration.
For their well being, as well as for our own,
We are asked to observe Right Speech,
And abandon idle chatter.

"He speaks in season, speaks what is factual, what is in accordance with the goal, the Dhamma, and the Vinaya. He speaks words worth treasuring, seasonable, reasonable, circumscribed, connected with the goal..."

Lovely - and heartfelt. :)

A young man once asked Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido 'Please would you teach me your Aikido'.

Ueshiba replied: 'Are you sure? Everyone else seems to want to create their own'.

We only have the the one true armour
And that's the Buddha's own sweet Dharma.

Strip away the Buddha's teaching
And all that's left is  hollow bleating.

Well said.  Let's get back to fundamentals.  Without strong fundamentals, how can you progress deeply into the Dharma?  Without a really strong, firm foundation at the bottom, how can you build a skyscraper without risking it falling down?

Some people talk about the Buddhist path and talk about what they think the Buddha meant - but pay no regard to what the Buddha actually said on those matters, preferring to create their own version of it all, thinking that what they created or are following is so profound.  Yet when you compare what they created with what the Buddha actually said on those matters - it's way off.

If we really want to learn the Buddha's teaching, reading the Suttas and the Sutras should be one of our foundations.  Then build upon that by investigating the meanings behind those Sutras and comparing it with commentaries by virtuous and highly respected monks and nuns.  And also practicing according to the fundamentals of morality, stillness and wisdom - these are the core and shouldn't be neglected, but should be taken up and cultivated well.

I like it  ;D
A man sees the rope in the twilight he mistakenly apprehends a snake and develops fear. To remove this fear he must remove the mind apprehending a snake by realizing that there is no snake. Even then, if the rope is left in the same place there is a danger that the same mistake will be made in the future. The only way to remove this danger is to remove the rope. Similarly, sentient beings observing their aggregates in the darkness of their ignorance mistakenly apprehend an inherently existent I. This mind grasping at an inherently existent I is the root of samsara and the source of all fear. To remove the fears of samsara we must remove this mind by realizing that there is no inherently existent I.

I have learned that being right, even with use of Right Speech, is not enough.  Speech must also be "harmonious" in respect for not only the person to whom you are addressing your speech, but also to those for all time who will read it.
