Title: Question about necklace
Post by: Maxwell89 on May 27, 2017, 01:03:25 pm
I wasn't quite sure where to post this, although I'm not a Buddhist I found this necklace lying around (believe it belongs to an old friend who was a Buddhist). If I could get any insight into the meaning of the symbol it would be greatly appreciated.

It is either from Cambodia or Thailand. It is a yantra supposed to protect the bearer from all evils.

The three-tiered symbol right above the circle symbolizes an 'arahant' - a person who has achieved buddhahood. The three tiers here are symbolic of: sīla (morals), samādhi (concentration) and paññā (knowledge). The circular pattern is a mandala or yantra, called Barami Pra Buddha Chao or the Buddha's blessings. Surrounding the circumference of the yantra is most likely some mantra (holy chanting believed to have powers). You can refer to some of the links below:

You should contact someone following Theravada Buddhism, from Thailand/Cambodia, for more information.

Some words in relation of "buddhism" and "youn" (yantra)are maybe useful to be not guided astray, given on Bu-SE: Buddhism Thervada Tattoos (https://buddhism.stackexchange.com/a/20304/11479)

This looks like a Thai amulet of the popular monk Luang Phor Koon (LP Koon): http://www.amuletcity.org/lp_koon_biography.html (http://www.amuletcity.org/lp_koon_biography.html)
