The kleshas
« on: July 28, 2016, 02:53:06 pm »
I've been thinking about meditating on the Kleshas but I need some clarifications on some things.

First is Desire. Desire is a mental poison but I'm having a hard time with this  for example,  All action is governed by desire. If you scratch  an itch it is out of a desire to scratch it. If you walk down a road it is because you desire it. If you read Dharma its because you desire it. So how can that be a poison?

Then with Aversion monks will meditate on for example a woman's inner body how it is filled with blood and guts and excrement so that they can Avert their sexual desires. But What you end up doing is dispelling Desire but then Adopt Aversion so you just flip the coin and still have a mental poison. So how can all aversion be bad if they meditate on aversion?

Now Ignorance are we talking all ignorance? Or just Spiritual ignorance?  For example I dont know how to program computers. I'm ignorant on how to program a computer. Is that a poison? I mean how can one learn everything and dispell ALL IGNORANCE?  I mean noone can live long enough to dispell all ignorance.

any advice here?

In simple terms....   Delusion is not seeing one's experience as it really is, eg transient and unsatisfactory.  Because of that we experience craving and aversion, wanting and not wanting, pulling in and pushing away, this leads to suffering.

"Craving" is more accurate than "desire", in the Pali it's "tanha", literally "thirst".

Hope that helps.
