The next life and those to follow?
« on: January 03, 2016, 10:20:29 pm »
As I read further and further, more questions arise. I realize it is important to seek a teacher and I am in the process of finding one that I may benefit from. But in the mean time-- my understanding is that our karma from past lives contributes to our thoughts, actions, and habits in our current lives and knowledge of this helps us in our path to enlightenment. At first I was asking myself,  if there is no "self" than what is the entity that benefits from enlightenment  . But then I gathered that enlightenment is a state of being and  is something the "I" that I know now is capable of achieving   (aside from whether that will actually happen or not in this lifetime) and means that "I" would be free from suffering in this life time. But in terms of karma, is it the goal to break the karma cycle as something that is necessary to be enlightened or are we concerned with karma because of where it will put us in the next life? If we have no soul or anything that continues on, no recollection or perception of our life as we know it would continue in to the next life, then what is the care in what the next life will be?. I am asumming that the next life is not the focus but rather helps to make us understand how past lives and karma affect us now so that we can break it's effects in order to achieve enlightenment ?

It's analogous to being "reborn" each morning when we wake up.  We're not the same person as the day before, but we still have to deal with the consequences of our actions the previous day.  So if we consume too much alcohol this evening we'll wake up with a hangover tomorrow morning.;)
