want to take refuge but scared
« on: December 12, 2015, 11:14:59 pm »
I only just recently began to learn about Buddhism and it has been through some DBT classes I have taken.   I am fascinated and really would love to learn to meditate.  I am so terribly agoraphobic though.  And have severe social anxiety.  I am thinking about driving to a Buddhist Temple (unfortunately an hour away from where I live) but my fears are over taking me   The thought of taking refuge is so relieving.  My body and mind have had enough.

I would love to learn and read more.. my mind is not very focused though

I did DBT too! I suggest meditating in a designated place at home until you can join a community, unless you do this already. Check out some of the many dharma talks available online until you can find a teacher. I also suffer from anxiety, though it manifests differently. It's not the best to be without a sangha but it doesn't have to be all or nothing IMHO. There is so much to be gained through meditation, that I hope you won't be stopped by thinking you have to go to a temple before you can explore a little.
