Hi I'm going to a halfway house tomorrow..
« on: January 08, 2014, 11:19:03 am »
I am going to a halfway house in Pittsburgh tomorrow. I'm nervous of course but I feel its a good choice. There are alot of buddhist communities in the area. Also the house offers time for meditation, and yoga classes.

any tips or suggestions to help me benefit and grow from this would be much appreciated.

Namaste

Hi,  SB.

Two questions arise in my mind:  "Half way from what?"  ...and..."Half way to what?"

No matter what the case, you will have to deal with change, hopefully, beneficial change. My suggestion, give some consideration as to what manner of change you would consider to be beneficial.

What Makes an Elder? :
A head of gray hairs doesn't mean one's an elder. Advanced in years, one's called an old fool.
But one in whom there is truth, restraint, rectitude, gentleness,self-control, he's called an elder, his impurities disgorged, enlightened.
-Dhammpada, 19, translated by Thanissaro Bhikkhu.

Remind yourself why you are there, daily, and that you are willing to face any difficulty to achieve your sobriety.

Otherwise your "Mara mind" will play tricks on you. I've known many people who allowed themselves to become indignant about about the house rules, the other people in the house, the annoying aspects of AA, etc. Eventually they become completely invested in fighting some imaginary war with the "program" and are not at all attending to their sobriety. (I mean sobriety the mental process, not just the act of abstaining.)

Ron- Its a halfway house for recovery to help you build your foundation for sobriety and transition into a sober lifestyle.

Thank you Monkey Mind. I have come here with an open mind and acceptance to whatever suggestions are given as a way to stay clean. I have an understanding that it is going to be difficult. I have been here for about 3 days now today will be the third, I have been meditating daily and I have also found that I will encounter a lot of situations in which I will be able to practice the Dhamma teachings I have learned thus far. Staying in the moment has helped a lot.

Thank you guys so much for ur suggestions.
