Coming up at E-Vam Institute New York

Traleg Khandro
Lujong - One Day Course

Date: June 30th
Time: 10am - 4pm
Venue: Manhattan
1455 Lexington Ave, #2B, New York, NY 10128

Course Description
Thoughts, Feelings and Sensations.
In Buddhism conflicting emotions are seen as one of the major obstacles to stabilizing the mind. In this course we will look at the process of separating out different elements of our experience to see how these elements when combined can cause disturbance in the mind. Through the use of physical and contemplative techniques we will look at overcoming emotional conflict.

Traleg Khandro, long-time student and wife to the late Traleg Kyabgon Rinpoche IX, is the Director of E-Vam Institute New York and Yeshe Nyima Centre in Sydney Australia. Khandro studied Buddhism under Traleg Rinpoche’s guidance for 30 years and has undertaken numerous long meditation retreats during that time. At Rinpoche’s request Khandro received traditional LuJong (Tibetan Yoga) training and is also a qualified Hatha Yoga instructor. Khandro has been teaching Buddhism and LuJong for several years throughout Australia, New Zealand and the United States.

Khenpo Ugyen Tenzin
Gateway to Knowledge

Dates: August 1 & 2
Time: 7:00pm both nights
Venue: E-Vam Institute
171 Water Street, Chatham, NY  12037
Course Description

'Gateway to Knowledge' is a very important text traditionally studied by Kagyu and Nyingma Shedras. Traleg Rinpoche began a Shedra at E-Vam Institute in Melbourne in 2010 and gave a thorough presentation of this text to his Shedra students. Before Rinpoche passed into Parinirvana, he expressed his wish that his students continue with the study of all three volumes of 'Gateway to Knowledge', and by doing so his students will have a solid foundation of Buddhist Knowledge on which they can build their further education upon. Khenpo Ugyen has kindly accepted Traleg Khandro's invitation to continue the commentary of this text.

Khenpo Ugyen Tenzin
Beacon of Certainty

Date: August 3 & 4
Time: TBA
Venue: E-Vam Institute
171 Water Street, Chatham, NY  12037
Course Description

For the last several years Traleg Rinpoche has been giving a commentary on Mipham Rinpoche's 'Beacon of Certainty' to his New York students. Khenpo Ugyen will be continuing this commentary for E-Vam New York.

For centuries, Dzogchen--a special meditative practice to achieve spontaneous enlightenment--has been misinterpreted by both critics and malinformed meditators as being purely mystical and anti-rational. In the grand spirit of Buddhist debate, 19th century Buddhist philosopher Mipham wrote Beacon of Certainty, a compelling defense of Dzogchen that employs the very logic it was criticized as lacking.

Khenpo Ugyen Tenzin completed his studies and received an Acharya degree (Master of Buddhist studies) from Karma Nalanda Institute and Sampurnanand Sanskrit University jointly in March 1991. On the 23rd of March of the same year, he was appointed as junior khenpo (professor) by His Eminence Jomgön Kongtrül Rinpoche and His Eminence Goshir Gyaltsap Rinpoche. Less than a month later, he was sent to Nimalung Monastery in Bhutan as a khenpo, where he taught Buddhist philosophy for six years. Khenpo Ugyen is currently residing at His Holiness Karmapa's American Seat,  Karma Triyana Dharmachakra in Woodstock, upstate New York.

Elizabeth Mattis Namgyel

Date: October 28th & 29th
Time: 7pm each night
Venue: E-Vam Institute
171 Water Street, Chatham, NY 12037

Course Description - TBA

Elizabeth Mattis Namgyel has studied and practiced the buddhadharma for twenty-five years under the guidance of her teacher and husband, Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche. After meeting Rinpoche in Nepal, she became his first Western student. She has been intimately involved with Rinpoche’s work in bringing Buddhist wisdom to the West, particularly with the development of Mangala Shri Bhuti, an organization dedicated to the study and practice of the Longchen Nyingtik lineage.

Elizabeth has an academic backround in both Anthropology and Buddhist Studies, but her learning is also grounded in practice. After she spent many years in solitary retreat, Rinpoche appointed Elizabeth as Retreat Master at Longchen Jigme Samten Ling, Mangala Shri Bhuti’s retreat center in southern Colorado. She has edited two of Rinpoche’s books -- It’s Up to You and Light Comes Through -- and has written a book of her own, titled The Power of an Open Question. She regularly teaches the buddhadharma in the United States and Europe.
