What's your opinion on Djwal Khul / Alice Bailey
« on: November 07, 2015, 09:09:45 pm »
One of my friends went to meet some spiritual lady, and she gave her a book by Alice Bailey.
A lot of the things in it seem contradictory, racist, and strange.
It talks about a lot of buddhist philosophies, but it talks about jesus, astrology, and all sorts of strange topics.

Apparently her books were based on the teachings of a tibbetan monk named Djwal Khul.
Just wondering if anybody knew anything more about her books, because my friend is concerned her uncle is sending her to a crazy lady.
Thanks for any insight provided, namaste.

Further research leads me to believe that it's an offshoot of sikhism.
How very interesting she would find a sikh lady here in America.

Let's see... where should I begin?

If I recall correctly, Djwal Khul was never a Tibetan monk, but it was said that he liked playing the role of being one --- although some people question whether the mysterious "DK" even existed, others have stated that his actual name was Dayal Majithia and involved with a Sikh reform movement.

As for Alice Bailey, there's not much that can be said about her writings and personal beliefs, nothing kind anyway, where she might have shown some promise in her early years, but the majority of her later writings weren't much better than those of Madame Blavatsky. Needless to say, I'm somewhat familiar with her writings and those of several other Theosophists, in part due to my earlier years spent among members of the Buddhist Theosophical Society, so I can understand your friend's hesitation and concern.

With that said, I wouldn't go as far as to say that there's nothing to be gained from reading her books, especially since there's certainly little jewels of wisdom scattered throughout some of her writings, but the veracity of the over-all content tends to be dubious at best, so it shouldn't be taken too seriously.

Just wondering if anybody knew anything more about her books, because my friend is concerned her uncle is sending her to a crazy lady.

It's kind of funny, but there's one thing which immediately comes to mind, namely that "insanity" is "relative", not to mention the fact that most Theosophists tend to come across like they're one big happy family.

Truth be told, I wouldn't be surprised if the majority turned out to be kissing cousins.

Thanks for your response.

How strange, maybe her uncle sent her there because she had interest in witchcraft.
I suppose this makes sense now, she was worried the lady was in a cult or something, which I guess would technically be true wouldn't it.

So strange, lol.

Maybe I'm getting senile in my old age, but I hope the crazy lady that's been mentioned in this thread isn't Alice Bailey herself --- she died back in 1949
