CNBC talking heads re. The Job situation in The U.S..
What Makes an Elder? :
A head of gray hairs doesn't mean one's an elder. Advanced in years, one's called an old fool.
But one in whom there is truth, restraint, rectitude, gentleness,self-control, he's called an elder, his impurities disgorged, enlightened.

Cui Jian, "Nothing to My Name" (Yi Wu Suo You)

Written in 1986, the song became something of an anthem during the Tiananmen Protests of 1989.

Cui Jian was trained as a classical musician, then turned to experimental pop/rock.

Manu Chao, "Bienvenida a Tiajuana," Prospect Park, Brooklyn, 2006

Many people, including many whose Spanish is, apparently, more adept that my own, mistakeningly assume this is a sex & drugs song -- "Tequila, Sex O Marijuana" etc., but it is so clear to me that he his emphathizing with the plight of the pan-Americans who get as far as the border, only to find themselves trapped in the Samsara that is Tiajuana.

My rough & ready translation:

Welcome to Tiajuana
Welcome, my love
In the nightime, and the morning
Welcome, my love.

Welcome mommy,
I'm in route to Bablylon ("I'm in ruta Babylon")
Welcome to dinner
A soup of prawns.

CHORUS:
The skull does not cry
A song of love
The skull does not cry
It has no heart* [Heart of the night-time]*

For the Panamerican
Welcome to Customs
Welcome my fortune
The sight of green pleases me.

I wanna go to San Diego
I wanna go y no puedo ("and I cannot")
Welcome "la Juana"
Welcome to Tiajuana

CHORUS

Welcome mommy
I'm in ruta Babylon
Welcome to Tiajuana
Tequila, sex or mariquana...

(The whole race to the frontier...)

*It's either: "No tiene corazon" or "Noche de corazon" -- anybody hear this better than me?

Same concert:

"La Primavera"

What time is it my heart (X4)

What time is it in England (in Japan, over in Fistera, in bye-bye bomb)?
What time is it in my entire life?
What time is it in Gibralta?
What time is it in Mozambique?
What time is it in Washington?

They have deceived us with "bye-bye bomb,"
They have deceived us with the springtime.

[After this Radio Bemba emanates "The Clash" for another five minutes  :wink1:)

Manu interupts for a public service announcement:

"This song is ... about those ... politicians
who try to ... fight violence with violence... terrorism with more terrorism...
Say 'no' to any kind of religious terrorism,
Say 'no' to the White House terrorism."

[Clash returns]...

Wish I'd been there...

Oh, Fiona!

What a beautiful voice.  Who is she?  Why have I never heard her before?

PBS re. the derivatives markets collapse and how it was predicted by the Commodities Chairman under U.S. President Clinton, denied by Greenspan in front of the Senate & House Hearing Committies that such a collapse coulde ever happen.
