What did you set aside?
« on: February 21, 2012, 04:25:45 am »
Could you share with us what kind of prejudices you have set aside recently?
I stopped going shopping every time I was coming back from work.
And you?

What a great question  :dharma:

You are introducing a subtle use of prejudice, discrimination or choice.
In an ideal mind state we do not have an overtly discriminatory nature. Rather we are effected by circumstance and harmonise with the moment.

I must admit I do not give things up. Rather I have a prejudice for positive action. For example I treat everyone disproportionately and myself as the Buddha. As I always say, 'if can't beat them, join them.'

Dhp 221. One should give up anger, renounce pride, and overcome all fetters. Suffering never befalls him who clings not to mind and body and is detached.

Dhp 338 If its root remains undamaged & strong, a tree, even if cut, will grow back. So too if latent craving is not rooted out, this suffering returns again & again.

I set aside drinking coffee and black tea when I am not sleepy. Yesterday I didn't drink them and felt more natural energy in me. Today I am not sleepy so I hope I will not drink them today.

The second day without coffee and black tea. Energy is natural, sometimes sleepy and boring but real.
What else to set aside?

Buddha kept it straight, easy and individual:

Quote
from Instructions to Rahula at Mango Stone

....

"What do you think, Rahula: What is a mirror for?"

"For reflection, sir."

"In the same way, Rahula, bodily actions, verbal actions, & mental actions are to be done with repeated reflection.

"Whenever you want to do a bodily action [the same for verbal and mental actions], you should reflect on it: 'This bodily action I want to do — would it lead to self-affliction, to the affliction of others, or to both? Would it be an unskillful bodily action, with painful consequences, painful results?' If, on reflection, you know that it would lead to self-affliction, to the affliction of others, or to both; it would be an unskillful bodily action with painful consequences, painful results, then any bodily action of that sort is absolutely unfit for you to do. But if on reflection you know that it would not cause affliction... it would be a skillful bodily action with pleasant consequences, pleasant results, then any bodily action of that sort is fit for you to do.

"While you are doing a bodily action, you should reflect on it: 'This bodily action I am doing — is it leading to self-affliction, to the affliction of others, or to both? Is it an unskillful bodily action, with painful consequences, painful results?' If, on reflection, you know that it is leading to self-affliction, to the affliction of others, or to both... you should give it up. But if on reflection you know that it is not... you may continue with it.

"Having done a bodily action, you should reflect on it: 'This bodily action I have done — did it lead to self-affliction, to the affliction of others, or to both? Was it an unskillful bodily action, with painful consequences, painful results?' If, on reflection, you know that it led to self-affliction, to the affliction of others, or to both; it was an unskillful bodily action with painful consequences, painful results, then you should confess it, reveal it, lay it open to the Teacher or to a knowledgeable companion in the holy life. Having confessed it... you should exercise restraint in the future. But if on reflection you know that it did not lead to affliction... it was a skillful bodily action with pleasant consequences, pleasant results, then you should stay mentally refreshed & joyful, training day & night in skillful mental qualities.

"If you promise something, you must do it!" - an eminent teacher
Anyone else set something sensual aside?

The fourth day of neither coffee nor black tea. 216 half-prostrations woke me up.

Already 4x108. I have plenty of energy.
Put aside your life situation and practise.
