Title: Raising Children in Inter-Religious Family
Post by: Tobszn on September 02, 2018, 03:23:23 am
Do you have any experiences to share? any advice to give? maybe even book/link recommendations?! -- for raising children in inter-religious families

(I'm having a 4 yrs old daughter. I'm coming from a Theravada background, and my wife is Christian. We live in Berlin, Germany. -- My wife is starting to go with her to church regularly and is also thinking to let our daughter start at small kids sunday school there. -- I was initially a bit freaked out of "losing my daughter to the Christians" and not being able to give her my background/values, since there are no buddhist groups/options for small kids here. -- I'm looking forward to attending some mindfulness retreats/courses with her, but these only start at 6 yrs of age mostly. -- I think my wife is pretty open to buddhism, but she is very strong in her Christianity. -- I e.g. don't know what I would respond when my daughter would ask me about God, what/how I would explain...)

You need to understand the similarities between the two religions and particularly understand "God" in a wiser non-personal way. "God" is "law", which is the same as Buddhism teaches about "Law" ("Niyama").

Hi Tobszn,

With so much religious freedom here in the West, early religious indoctrination doesn’t always work out as planned. I was raised by a very religious mother and had to go to Christian Church every Sunday into my teens. Then I read about Eastern religions and zen and I started practicing meditation. Before long I was sitting zazen at a zen center.

However, I credit that early Christian influence with instilling in me a strong "way-seeking-mind" and I think it's one reason I've continued to practice meditation devotedly ever since.
