Beware the Sock Puppet
« on: May 24, 2015, 07:56:14 pm »
Although I originally posted this back in 2010, it seems more than appropriate to repost it in an updated form, especially since this has happened quite a few times in the past year.

What is a sock puppet?

A sock puppet describes an additional account created by an existing member of an Internet community, sometimes to manufacture the illusion of support in a vote or argument. Other reasons include a desire to support or vote on an issue coupled with a desire to have one's "main" account stay away from the issue. This behavior is sometimes seen as being dishonest by online communities and as a result these individuals are often labeled as trolls.

If you have created an extra account for any of the above reasons, the account will be closed and you will receive a warning without the implication of further moderation occurring.

If you have created an extra account to circumvent a previous action of moderation, the account will be closed and you will be permanently banned without notice, warning, or recourse --- there are several ways for a former member to request a moderation review and have their posting privileges restored, but creating a sock puppet is not one of them.

This image comes from "Puppet", an animated film by Patrick Smith. Details of the film can be seen on the Blendfilms website ( The film synopsis reads: "A young man fabricates a simple sock puppet, not knowing the abuse the entity will soon inflict upon its creator. Through an escalating series of torture, the possessed puppet takes on the embodiment of fear, chaos, and willful self-destruction.

This is great!  Glad that the moderators are going through to stop these types of accounts.
