Ordinary Conception and Ordinary Appearance
« on: November 14, 2011, 02:22:16 pm »
Does anybody have any tips for practising generation stage HYT? Geshe-la says in the beginning preventing ordinary conception is more important than maintaining clear appearance. Ordinary appearance is defined as the appearence we have of an inherently existent 'I', 'mine' and other phenomena, and ordinary conception grasps at these appearances as true.

I find it all very logical, but don't think I'm practising very effectively. For a brief moment in my six line prayer or during Dakini Yoga I may reduce/abandon ordinary appearance and conception. In the meditation break I often recall the emptiness of all phenomena and know in my heart that phenomena do not appear in the way that they actually exist. By definition, at such times I would not be assenting to ordinary appearence so would also be abandoning ordinary conception. However, it doesn't feel like there is much going on and the practice is rather flat. I find it virtually impossible outside meditation to maintain clear appearance. Maybe I need to collect more virtue and purify.

Any comments, personal experiences or tips would be appreciated, thanks  :)

Do you have a lama?  Whose materials are you reading?

Hi, Geshe Kelsang Gyatso is my guru and I'm studying mainly from his books Guide to Dakini Land, Mahamudra Tantra and Tantric Grounds and Paths

You must have the HYT empowerment for such practices, as GKG makes very clear.

In addition, a Resident Teacher in an NKT centre is there to guide you and I suggest your direct all questions to them as your Vajra Brother or Sister.

HYT is secret practice and generation stage is something you should not be practising without empowerment and guidance, and not discussing on an open forum. ;)
