An 'enlightened' person in modern times?
« on: January 08, 2016, 07:20:59 pm »
Hello! I am new here, but am doing research for a project in school. Many people suggested these forums!

My question is: Is everyone who attains 'enlightenment' a Buddha? Are there different types of enlightenment?

What about modern mountain-monks, who believe that after undertaking long, grueling tests of endurance and focus, a person can become enlightened in this lifetime, and walk around living as an enlightened person? What would we call them: a Buddha, a Bodhisattva, or something else?

What about people who, after much spiritual practice and meditation, become enlightened and discover a way to heal others with just their touch? What would one call them? For example, adherents to Japanese Reiki believe that it's creator became enlightened after a long fast and meditation on Mt. Kurama (sp?), and went on to teach how to help others with his new knowledge. Would he be considered a Buddha, or a Bodhisattva?

Or the Yogis who experience 'nirvana'. Would they be called Bodhisattva, or Buddha?

Or is there another term besides those, for people who attain enlightenment?

I suppose I am asking: What is the 'hierarchy' of enlightened people/beings, and how is it organized as such? How would modern enlightened-people fit into this?

And bouncing off that, what can these modern enlightened-people DO for others? Many Buddhist deities in history are attributed miraculous and magical skills, that they can use to help their followers. Curing diseases, bringing wealth, etc....Do people still believe that such things are possible? (I mean that in the politest way possible).

Thank you! Feel free to answer with detail, as I am interested in this subject, and would like the other students to receive correct information from me!

Hi  :namaste:

From bottom to top we might describe it this way:

Hell dweller
Ignorant
Human
Practitioner
Stream entrant/path walker
Arhat
Bodhisattva
Buddha
Multi dimensional Buddha/pureland Buddhas/Buddhas in waiting etc
