The 4 Ways to Answer Questions
« on: January 01, 2010, 05:16:50 am »
In the Panha Sutta, the Buddha outlined the 4 ways to answer questions:

"There are these four ways of answering questions. Which four?
1.  There are questions that should be answered categorically [straightforwardly yes, no, this, that].
2.  There are questions that should be answered with an analytical [qualified] answer [defining or redefining the terms].
3.  There are questions that should be answered with a counter-question.
4.  There are questions that should be put aside.
These are the four ways of answering questions."

Anguttara Nikaya IV.42 (Panha Sutta)

So we can try this framework out whenever we are answering questions by:
1.  First assessing which type of question class this particular question belongs to, and
2.  Then approach it the question using whichever of the 4 ways you've chosen.
