But I guess the origin founder of this tradition had the interest to bring beings in this state of insight. But with time, good intention gets lost.

Interesting to see you taking an interest in Buddhist cosmology.  I don’t know anything about the Pure Land, but if you are comparing it to Pure Abodes then it should be noted that The Thirty-one Planes of Existence into which beings can be reborn during their long wandering, is still samsara.

If you don't know anything about the Pure Land then why are you speaking about it?
The Pure Land itself is Like Nirvana, and it is simply a place we go to train directly under a Buddha.its is a place of non retrogression

the Pure abodes is also a place one goes and never leaves this place until Nibbana, there is no more rebirth in the Pure Abodes it is a place of non-retrogression.

that's my comparision nothing more nothing less

“As superior as is rebirth in the higher worlds, such an existence is nonetheless temporary, subject to change, and involves the fundamental conflicts of existence within the limits of transmigration. This can be broken only by further spiritual insight, resulting in Nirvāṇa and release from the cycle of rebirths” (source).

not quite
neither Pure Land nor Pure abodes have fundamental conflicts of existence withing the limits of Transmigation, both are places of
non-retrogression those conflicts have been removed
as the Buddha said if I had been born into the Pure abodes I would of been in a state of non retrogression and have never left the Pure abodes until I attained Enlightenment Soooo... the cycle of Birth and death is actually ended when you enter the Pure abodes and the Pure Land and the cycle of Samsaric actions(defilement) are also ended due to the non retrogression of its inhabitants...... the only exception being(in the Pure Land is if a Bodhisattva so chooses to leave to perform his duties)

I keep coming back to this thread and over time to this subject.
Various schools have varied methods (and/or requirements) for getting to the Pure Lands or parts of, or kingdoms within it or whatever..rather a baffling array of names and descriptions. I think pretty much however, all schools agree on the same idea of it not being eternal, not being a reward, as a place to continue 'practice' without the demands and distractions of life.

I've been Googling various aspects and quickly skimming articles. I'm so pressed for time that i'm grabbing minutes now and then with a fluctuating Wi-Fi signal on a broken down computer. Today looking at the article on Wikipedia which is kind of a list and brief description of many of these names and terms i saw it in mind as a three dimensional symbolic 'map' of light with multiple levels and directions. Oh yeah, that works for now. So now for me the who, what, why, when and even somewhat the how of it is coming together. Which leaves the where.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pure_land

Anyone care to venture their ideas on this? Where are the Pure Lands located? That's simple and open ended enough.

I  have like bits and pieces of information, definition, experience...some of it appearing to be in conflict. Our teacher always said not to believe anything he said or take it on faith but to question, test and prove for ourselves. That applies not only to him of course, but also to everything and anyone else, including ourselves.

Hey Sahaja

The Pure Land is in the mind of the Buddha.
(generally was taught that Dharmakara went about purifying himself a Buddha feild, and the Buddha field was his mind.
once the buddha field/mind was purified he became Enlightened.

The Pure Land is a key tenet in Mahayana Buddhism it is essentially the accumulation of the Bidhisattva path to save all living beings.(which is why all Bodhisattvas seek to formilate a Pure Land.... Or go to hell)

Peace and Love

P.S.

Most of the Tonglen practice/teachings can be found in the Larger Amitabha sutra in the last 1/3 of the Book. If you want dirrect quote I think I have 13 to post.

I understand

What wisdom and knowledge does is allow you to understand and contemplate the essences and meaning of subjects in books.

Worldy wisdom and knowledge helps one with understanding worldly teachings, the unsurpassed all knowing is beyond any wordly wisdom,or acquired learning....it is simply....Knowing.

Faith,striving/effort and forbearance are the most important qualities.
if people never develop the effort to strive to attain their goals, then no progress at all can be made towards worldly or spiritual wisdom.

Peace and Love

Further admonishment to cultivate good practices and accumulate merit

V237.   The Buddha said to Bodhisattva Maitreya,” What you say is true. Everyone who worships and praises the Buddha shall gain the greatest merit. A very long time will pass before another Buddha will appear in this world. Having now become a Buddha in this world, I have revealed the Dharma and spread the teachings of the way, removed the doubts of the people, destroyed that which is the cause of lust and craving and ended the source of all evils. I travel unhindered anywhere I please in the three worlds.

V238.   The wisdom found in the scriptures explain every aspect of life. It contains the basic and complicated teachings and explains each clearly. It explains the existence of the five transmigrations of rebirth, setting free those who are not yet been liberated and showing the difference between the paths that lead to samsara and Nirvana.

V239.   “Maitreya, you should know that you have, since innumerable kalpas, walked the Bodhisattva path in order to save all living beings. You have helped countless beings accept the way and attain Enlightenment. You and all the gods and humans in the ten directions along with the four types of followers have since endless time been stuck in the five destinations of samsara. Having suffered indescribable mental and physical torments. You to have suffered endless cycles of both and death until today. Now you have been in the presence of a Buddha, hearing him teach the Dharma and having heard the wonderful name of Buddha Amitabha. They greatest joy has been shared today.

V240.   “Now is the moment to seek liberation from the pains of birth, death, old age, and illness. All of samsara is filled with the kleshas of impurity and perversion and there is nothing here for which you can find true happiness. You should resolve to have proper manners and commit meritorious deeds. Always do what is good, stay disciplined and purify yourselves, washing off defilements of the mind. Always be sincere in your word and action, and do not allow any contradiction between what you think and what you do. You should seek your own liberation and at the same time you should help others also find liberation. With devotion accumulate the roots of virtue and sincerely wish to be born into the Pure land.

V241.   No matter how hard you practice in this life, you will only be in this world for a short time. Then upon death you will be reborn in the Pure Land of Buddha Amitabha where you will enjoy infinite bliss. Never retrogressing from the way nor ever again having to be subject to birth and death. Being forever free from the afflictions of greed, anger and ignorance. If one wishes his life span to be as long as a kalpa, a hundred kalpas, or ten million kalpas, his life span will be whatever he wishes. In this land one will dwell effortlessly and accomplish Nirvana. You should each vigorously seek to fulfill all your aspirations. Do not doubt or give up on your great resolutions, otherwise as a result you may end up being reborn in the palace of seven jewels which presides in the Borderland on the outskirts of the Pure land. For which one will be stuck there five hundred years until they are ready to enter the Pure Land.
Maitreya said to the Buddha,” Having heard your considerate admonition, we shall all follow the way and practice what you have taught us, never doubting your teachings”.

Attention moderators!  I am about to post.... I would move it to the Danger Zone myself....

So,  anyone else ever been there?  To any of the Pure Land Kingdoms?
Or had any other experience with it?  Or know anyone who has?

Hi Sahaja. There's really no reason to move anything into the Danger Zone, not at this time anyway, especially since it appears that everyone's respecting another.

There are no inappropriate topics, just inappropriate replies  :wink1:

If someone has already been the the Pure Land, they most probably would be returning to earth as a Bodhisattva.

Actually, stories of Pure Land are not uncommon in real life encounters with family members of the person who cultivated this Dharma practice.

You might find the various translations of "Pure Land" quite interesting ---  for example, "Tierra Pura" is popular in Mexico, Spain and Argentina, as well as South American countries in general.

Do you know of any other translations?
