Investigate any group carefully before you join. Find a teacher if you can. Get a source of sutras. I like Thanissaro Bhikku's online translations, good enough to be useful and very available.

These are the essentials, I think. Buddha (represented by a good teacher), Dharma and Sangha.
Sergeant Schultz was onto something.

Hello, Cory, welcome to FreeSangha. I agree with Catmoon. Just remember, if you attend a group or sit with a teacher, you don't have to stay with that group or teacher forever. Shop around, find a good fit for you.

thank you both for your advice. I feel that the biggest obstacle for me will be finding a teacher. but I do believe there is at least one temple in my city. I suppose my best bet is to start there. are there any specific things I should look for or ask?

Hi cory,  :)

As you progress you will come to appreciate:

That the Buddha is already present (your Ideal or Higher self)  :buddha:
The Dharma is already present (listening to the advice of your best inner Wisdom Buddha)  :dharma:
The Sangha, is already present (your variety of selves that can be incorporated in the Middle Way)

So you may already have many of the tools to sit with you.  :om:
What encouragement can you offer us fellow beginners?

Many thanks  <3

I am going for a walk. I am going to smile at people.
Think of it as proactive Bodhicitta . . .
It has a strange effect on many people . . . they smile back . . .

. . . must be a karma thing . . .  :D

Begin at the beginning and go on till the end.  Do some reading and studying on the way.  Learn things and then practice them to develop skill.
