Hello All, I Would Love if you Could Help me on my Journey!
« on: February 20, 2017, 09:36:07 am »
Hello everyone, my name is Emma and I'm new here. I'm 18 years old, a science student and from the West Midlands in England. Recently I've been growing more and more interested in faith - specifically Buddhism and Spiritualism, so figured signing up here would help me on my path! I was always a stubborn child and never believed in 'God' because the notion of some large bearded man manipulating life itself from the skies seemed barmy to me, as a scientist. But I've grown to realise that God isn't that. God is a feeling or a divinity, not a physical being. It's the energy that holds life together in harmony. I'd really like to explore this further.

I'm drawn to Buddhism and Spiritualism for the level of acceptance offered. Many other religions turned my stomach because I knew the majority of the people who practice them would shun me and my lifestyle, but I know I will be accepted here.

I do have one enquiry that was my final push to signing up here. I'm seeking a Buddhism/Spiritualist church in my area but am unsure of which is best to attend. All I want to do is simply meet a member of the Temple/Church and discuss some of the issues I'm struggling with at the moment in order to tackle them from a religious perspective. My area is Birmingham in the UK. If anybody knows anywhere worth visiting around this area I would be so grateful for you to share! If not, could you direct me to which thread is best for posting a question like that?

Many thanks and I look forward to connecting with more members here!  :om:

Hi, Somnium.

While I cannot personally recommend this Buddhist Center, because I have no experience with them, you might want to begin your search here:  http://www.birminghambuddhistcentre.org.uk/

As for forums, which may be of help to you on Free Sangha, I would suggest looking-in of each of them and determining in which you feel most comfortable.

Welcome, not matter what your choice.

What Makes an Elder? :
A head of gray hairs doesn't mean one's an elder. Advanced in years, one's called an old fool.
But one in whom there is truth, restraint, rectitude, gentleness,self-control, he's called an elder, his impurities disgorged, enlightened.
-Dhammpada, 19, translated by Thanissaro Bhikkhu.

Hi Somnium, I know Birmingham, UK, well. Have you tried the Triratna group at The Birmingham Buddhist Centre? I went there for many years. They are a Western Buddhist group. Find them at Birmingham Buddhist Centre, 11 Park Road, Moseley, Birmingham, West Midlands, B13 8AB Tel: 0121 449 5279. It's round the back of Edgbaston Cricket Club, and off the main street in Moseley. They hold a Sangha night on Thursdays, 7.30 to 9.45, when they run courses for beginners and those interested in meditation. Go a bit earlier and have a cup of tea and a chat with any of the team running the evening. Haven't been there for a while as my neck isn't up to meditating with others these days, but I keep up with what's going on there.
“You do not need to leave your room. Remain sitting at your table and listen. Do not even listen, simply wait, be quiet, still and solitary. The world will freely offer itself to you to be unmasked, it has no choice, it will roll in ecstasy at your feet.” Franz Kafka

Thank you very much for your recommendation and information! Will definitely look into this, I believe it's close to my university as well which makes it even better and more practical! Thanks for helping me on my journey  :om:
