Hi All
« on: January 08, 2012, 03:30:45 pm »
Finally getting around to introducing myself after lurking around for a couple of days. I'm currently living in Wyoming, where there are very few centers or sanghas.  The local UU church has a Buddhist mediation group, and I practice with them.  Otherwise I read, listen to Dharma talks (primarily from Dharmaseed.org), and practice meditation on my own.  Lately I've been looking for ways to connect with other Buddhists and deepen my practice.  That's what brought me here.

Welcome to Free Sangha.

Maybe your UU discussion group would consider hosting a monk or nun to visit and give a teaching. Many monastics will travel to teach if their travel expenses and lodging are paid for, and because they live simply, eat simply, and are easy to please, they make for easy guest speakers.

Good plan. Many are very open to answering questions and this might be an opportunity for the whole Church to gain another perspective on its interfaith dialogue.
You or your group could also travel to any available monastery/temple or similar meditation or study group.
It is one of the ways we expand in knowledge of the dharma.

Good luck  :buddha:

Thanks for the suggestions.  Actually, a local yoga group hosts a Rinpoche, Khen Rinpoche.  I missed his visit last year, but I hear he will be back in June.  The UU group (Unitarian Universalists) are loosely affiliated with the Shambhala school founded by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, mainly because the founder of their meditation group trained there.

I just wanted to add that I'm probably going to be more of an occasional visitor here.  I'm a busy householder - a husband, a two year old, second baby on the way, 2 dogs, a full time job, and I'm trying to volunteer at a local science museum on top of all that.  Sometimes I don't get on the computer for days at a time, and even when I do I tend to spend a long time thinking about what to write before before I hit post - if I ever get that far.

I used to go to a Sham b allah centre to meditate  :teehee:
 :gawrsh: Shambhala I should say . . . must behave . . .

Yogis practice meditation as do a whole variety of traditions,
from the New age, martial arts to solo practitioners.

Hi, Blind Seaturtle.  We have a great deal in common.  Our local UU Church is where our sangha meets as well.  Welcome a'board.  Next time I head out to Yellowstone I'll give you a heads-up and we can get together for lunch.
