Hi there, I'm scared of Buddhism
« on: November 19, 2015, 09:44:31 pm »
Hi there my names Brayden and I've been on and off casually studying darhma for a few years. The thing that scares me about Buddhism is that I believe it with all my heart that it works but I'm scared to commit to it because I feel like it will put a wall between me and the people in my life. I also believe that suffering is essential to the human experience and it helps me grow so much and to try and ease my suffering feels like I will cease to grow. Does this make sense?
Anyway, nice to meet you all and hopefully I will stick around

Believing in something can also be personal, so need for other people to know about you beliefs.
If you don't fell comfortable saying to others about your beliefs (e.g. because they have other religion), then simply do not say it until you will feel comfortable. In general through dialogue your can help others to understand you.
Also, Buddha does not require commitment from you. "Believe nothing no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense".
Finally regarding suffering what you said is the center of the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche. "Only through pain you can improve yourself. If it is not painful then it means that you still are in your comfort zone". Nevertheless, pain is not always the solution. Through patience and a step by step approach you can achieve more than through an unbalanced painful way. If it is painful for you perhaps you are not still ready for growing more.
“I hope for nothing. I fear nothing. I am free!"

If it works for you, and you know that it will bring you peace, then keep it up. The Dharma is wonderful. But if you feel that it will bring a wall between you're loved ones, try only bringing it up unless someone asks you about it. They will be open to it, and you can teach them.

The Buddha opens doors and pathways to others. I never saw Buddhism as a red robe one needs to wear to scare off loved ones. By looking at me on a daily basis, you'll see a huge Star Wars fan, a filmmaker, nutrition fanatic, and very little Buddhist. Even when I practiced more, there was little or no evidence that I was "Buddhist."  :)

Blessings.

It needn't be like, and Buddhist practice often improves the relationships you have because you become more aware.   Or do you worry that  some people won't approve?

thats all self conversation and conceptional misguidance of view, and thats completely fine, however can you step out of yourself for 1 minuet of conceptual time and space just to exist without?
