New to forums, less new to the Dharma
« on: April 17, 2018, 02:00:02 am »
I have never used a forum before; the closest thing being reddit, and I have always been hesitant. Though where I am in life currently pushed me to take a chance.

I have identified as a Buddhist since the 7th grade, and I attribute this to my Social Studies teacher whose name I have regretfully forgotten. He was the first teacher to take the time to truly expand on more than the western interpretation of history and what he taught me that day in class has clearly had an impact on me, as it was nearly a decade ago.

I am a layman, at best. I purchased the Tripitaka and am reading through it at a pace that allows me to truly absorb the teachings. So, very slowly. While the concept of mindfulness does not escape me, the more formal teachings are a bit enigmatic still. I hope to correct that moving forward.

I grew up in a Christian household; southern Baptist in the United States to be specific, but that was never a line of thinking that resonated with me. I still live in the deep south and frequently encounter ostricization for my faith.

I will admit, I'm a bit lost in life right now. Between the world and my ever adjusting goals I lack direction. My only certainties are the Dharma and that I wish to be a devout buddhist, spreading peace and good virtue everywhere I go.

I look forward to being a part of this community, and helping it to grow and improve.

I appreciate your taking the time to read my introductory post and I do hope we can become fast friends.

With love,

        Plaid Bear

Hi, Plaid Bear.  Your comment reminds me of the following quote:  "Where ever you go, there you are."....Jon Kabat-Zinn

You may want to check it out.  Sounds like the path you have currently chosen.

Be well!

What Makes an Elder? :
A head of gray hairs doesn't mean one's an elder. Advanced in years, one's called an old fool.
But one in whom there is truth, restraint, rectitude, gentleness,self-control, he's called an elder, his impurities disgorged, enlightened.
-Dhammpada, 19, translated by Thanissaro Bhikkhu.
