New to the Forum
« on: December 16, 2011, 05:41:14 am »
Hello, My name is Jim I am new to the forum. I am hoping I have found the right place where my questions can be answered  :namaste:

Right now I am having trouble trying to figure out which school of Buddhism I want to follow. I am feeling very overwhelmed with the information I have discovered on each school. I don't expect anyone here to simply tell what school to follow but some direction would be very much appreciated thank you in advance!

Hi Jim,

simple is good. Here is a website with is very simple and explains the root understanding and the basic practice.

Just be good, its not much more and to master it is all what is needed to be done for the first time. *smile*

To just visit a monastery and come in personal contact with practitioner is maybe the best way. Just follow your heart and do not fear. All you can loose is suffering and your rebirth.

Welcome, Jim,

The vehicle you use is not as important as the journey.  Familiarize yourself with the basics and the rest will fall into place.

If there is a Dharma center near you, then you should visit.  Talk to the people there and attend some Dharma talks.  If you like the place, keep going.  If not, move onto another.  You will find that the teachings will all be similar, it's just the methods that will differ - so find a place in which you feel comfortable and encourages your practice.

Try not to get caught up in the pageantry, but concentrate on the teachings instead.

Peace.
You've been taught that there is something wrong with you and that you are imperfect, but there isn't and you're not.

Very well said. It is not where you start but the intention to finish . . .
My first Buddhist temple/dharma centre we sat and meditated in chairs.
Eventually I heard the sonorous snoring of the mindfully asleep from the back.

My second visit to a monastery was more inspirational.
Go sit with Buddhists. Sit with Buddhas. Sit with trees.

Read. Practice. Be attentive.
One day you will be wise and we can call on you for dharma . . .   :)
