Dharma Ages Teaching

I wondered what you thought about the teaching about three dharma ages.

It seems to make sense that we are in a waning period and personally I doubt if the popularity of Buddhism in the west will last or be any kind of non-superficial revival.

However, I also assume that all religions that have become established or even just survived multiple generations feels that they are drifting away from original teachings and are often self-critical.

Thoughts?

This seems to be more of something built on shifting sands --- for example, the length of the current age hasn't been consistant, but something that's changed through the years, academically speaking. The end of of the cycle, as in a "dharma-ending age" was also a common theme in early Chinese history:
