Title: Unusual mantra?
Post by: Sheila on July 10, 2017, 03:15:25 pm
Hello folks,

Someone found this mantra (?) inside a pendant (sadly, I don't have a photo of the pendant or access to it):

It seems to be sort-of Sanskrit (possibly another Indian language altogether?), but I found myself wondering whether it was actually code; maybe to get a message past Chinese censors, disguised as a mantra?

The less exciting alternative is that the non-Tibetan pendant seller simply wanted to sell the pendant and scribbled this out, lol, but it looks a little too competent in some ways for that.

Very curious - would love to hear what you think, and thank you!

Its written in Tibetan.

I did study some classical Tibetan years ago, but I've forgotten it now, sorry.

It's definitely Tibetan.

Contact Naropa Unioversity in Boulder, CO.  They have a Tibetan translation program and someobody there would be able to translate that for you.  They may take on the project and give to a student, or something.  I'm reluctant to drop names but I know two translators there.  They're good.  One has translated several Tibetan texts and translated in real time for notable teachers.  The other actively trains translators.  Give them a call.
