Title: Meditation routine: managing to meditate on a daily basis

Hello all.
Would those of you who meditate every day please tell me how you schedule it in your day? Do you get up an hour early to do so? Or just set aside time during the day/night?
I only manage to meditate 3 times a week--sometimes 4. But I think my life would be better if I meditated every day. Can't always find the time to do so during the day.

When you arfe beginning a meditation practice, you pretty much have to make time, until the practice become more of a habit.

I practice in the morning.  I have a 45 minute bus ride 5 days a week with very few stops.    I will practice from 5 - 20 minutes.  Sometimes longer.  Works really well.  Lately I've started working  with my Gru's taching on the 4 Foundations of Mindfullness again after some years.

I guess the point is,  you don't have to have a special place to practice or even a time, but if you want to increase your weekly practice time, you'll have to just make the time the best way you can.  That might mean getting up earlier, or identify free time that can be used for practice.

Don't sweat, keep practicing when you can. When you begin to realize results you will find the time you need, naturally, with a fit that is right for you. I encourage you to try to develop a routine.

Daily is best, so if you can find a way, do it.  You don't have to do an hour a day.  Five minutes every day is better than an hour that you can only manage once every other month.  Getting up five minutes early isn't going to kill you.

I get up, let the dog out to pee, clean the cats' litter boxes, wash my face, then sit for ten minutes.  Every day.  I do occasionally miss it if I have an appointment early in the morning.  But that is rare.  When that happens, I try, later in the day, to at least say the appropriate mantra, so as to keep my committment for the day.

20 minutes in the morning,30 at lunch, and 1.5 hours in the evening.

When I started a regular meditation practice in the early sixties, I soon settled on a half hour (one incense stick) upon getting out of bed in the morning and another half hour before getting back into bed at night. I did many sesshins and long retreats, but continuing that half hour sit first and last thing everyday was essential. In later years I started aiming for 3 hours every day, one way or another.

For an advanced practitioner, who’s serious about realization, I think gradually building up to 2 to 3 hours daily is important, with longer periods on occasion. Organizing one’s life so that is possible can be challenge for most lay folk, but many people spend more time than that watching TV, or doing needless stuff on the internet. I’m fortunate to have been self-employed most of my life so I had more freedom to practice.

Now, I usually meditate for a least a little while first thing in the morning but I find I’m too sleepy to meditate before bed. However I almost always wake up after about four hours sleep and pull myself out of bed to meditate for one or two hours and then go back to bed again. Due to my aged body and knees, I alternate relatively short 20-25 minute meditation sessions with 5-10 minutes of walking meditation. I rarely do long retreats or 7 day sesshins anymore but for several decades I’ve been doing sit/walk/sit all day every Sunday – which really powers my daily practice – highly recommended for anyone serious about this practice!
