Here are some resources about Metta practice (the practice of cultivating goodwill for all beings). :

Audio instructions and sample guided mediation:

Written instructions:

A couple of Metta chants I really enjoy:

And as always (because I am posting these outside of the Theravada forum), the emphasis on Pali sources reflects my background, others are encouraged to post Metta instructions from other traditions.

if you are looking to resolve difficulties in relationships, metta practice is certainly a wise choice.

You might want to engage traditional counseling in addition to metta practice and let both work together.

There are therapists who themselves are practicing Buddhists.  That would be ideal.

The thing here is this.  Ultimately, meditation can solve all problems.  However, very few of us develop such mastery over meditation that we can completely solve all of our life problems with just the use of meditation.

So, while we are on the path and while we are practicing meditation, it is wise to use the general accumulated knowledge of our society to engage working on our difficulties.

From my point of view, the first few years of meditation practice are just an introduction.  I don't think real competency starts until after meditating daily for 15 - 30 minutes for at least a few years.  There are exceptions of course, but generally, that is the type of scenario that most folks encounter.

Lovingkindess practice is more than sitting in meditation is a meditation posture and getting in touch with the spirituality within.

It is consciously engaging the external practice of grace, courtesy, kindness, caring and giving.

We need both.  So, physically going out and doing volunteer work, handing sandwiches to the poor at a soup kitchen...nothing replaces that kind of action.  That kind of direct, concrete action has a power over the mind and heart that can't be replaced merely be sitting on the cushion.

Yes, some rare and powerful souls can do exactly that.  But the vast majority of us simply do not have that kind of capacity.  We have to work towards that, both from the inner world of meditation and the outer world of giving.

Sometimes aspirants belittle the power of "Random Acts of Kindness" as a kind of "Hallmark greeting card" of spirituality.  If these things are engaged very superficially, I guess that could be very limited in spiritual power.  However, these kinds of activities tend to allow us to perceive the truly spiritual in people, behind the limitations and surface personality.  In that sense, they really are irreplaceable.

So, while bringing coffee and donuts to work may not be pinnacle of metaphysical consciousness, not engaging in those simple kinds of actions is really quite a wasted opportunity.

And, by loving all of those around us...we help solve many of the personal difficulties that we encounter in relationships.  This is so as the obstruction to healthy relationships is often the manifestation of our ego or their ego.  And, as they say and is quite conquers all.  It conquers all problems.  By that I mean spiritual love for all.
