What's your favourite Buddhist practice?
« on: February 25, 2010, 06:28:50 am »
Mine is "watching waves break on rocks".  I find it very calming and also get the occasional glimpse of the way things really are - ceaseless change with underlying rythmns ( or something! ).

During time off when (I) was in the military in Japan, used to walk around Shikanoshima (Deer Island) which is near Fukuoka on Kyushu.  The rocks near the ocean were replete with sulfurous compounds which left them splashed and veined with yellows and reds.  The sunsetting, sunrising, and storms arising were my favorite times for the same reason that you stated.  My mind was clear, and (I) could be totally present, merged with the entire experience making me aware that (I) was as much a part of all the change and turbulence as all the other environmental dynamics:  Nothing there which was me, or mine.  Just being present, merged in the experience.

Mine is "watching waves break on rocks".  I find it very calming and also get the occasional glimpse of the way things really are - ceaseless change with underlying rythmns ( or something! ).

Tonglen.

I learned it from Pema Chodron's books and Dharma talks.
