Facility for personal blogs?
« on: October 15, 2013, 03:56:19 am »
I've noticed that the posting of some members resembles personal blogging rather than dialogue on a topic, so how about introducing a facility here for personal blogs?

I've noticed that too Spiny and realised they are intended as blogs rather than topics for discussion. I think a blog feature would be helpful.

My view is that on a discussion forum it's good practice to start threads with a clear subject or question, and then attempt to keep the discussion more or less on topic.

If I recall correctly, the idea of providing blog space was kicked around here once before and never really got off the ground for some reason or another.

Personally, I don't see a problem with members posting material that might be more blog orientated if the material is informative --- also, such postings can lead to discussion, where further questions by other members are sometimes raised.

Another issue would be the terms under which FS should even consider hosting blogs, namely the commitment on the part of the member to post something new on a regular basis.

A good example of this is Bhikkhu Samahita's Dhamma Drops, where it's really the only regular post that would actually count as a blog entry.

If depends what you mean by "informative".  Somebody just typing in what they're currently thinking about might be informative and interesting, but it might also be unintelligible and tedious.

I suspect most people here know what I mean by "informative", that it wouldn't include posts that are unintelligible and/or tedious.

Aren't there places for personal blogs, like facebook, twitter etc.
Sounds like it would just "water down" any useful posts and would be less likely to start an active discussion.
And then you might reply to a topic and the poster would say "hey get off my blog"!

By the way, what is a blog?   :teehee:

Ah I see. Some are multi author blogs, while most are personal blogs, posted by the person themselves.  That's cleared the confusion. Thanks DK.
But would it really fit in with Freesanghas present format?

If were talking about a member's composition style in posting, then there really isn't a problem, but it could be a nightmare if we we're talking about using blog software alongside the existing forum software, such as having different databases, ect.

IMO we need to make accommodations when it comes to various composition styles, not restrict such things if it's in keeping with the Terms of Service (TOS).

We did plan to start a platform for personal blogs and the framework is still there at http://blogs.freesangha.com/ but when we launched it, absolutely no one was interested so we kinda let it sink into oblivion.

Oh, and it also has a link to DharMap, http://dharmap.net/ which I personally think is a really nice idea, but I haven't had time to improve it since I made it.
