What Does Logged Mean?
« on: August 14, 2010, 05:49:59 am »
Found this symbol beneath several posts next to <Report to Moderator>:

<  Logged >, which is a linked icon indicating a geometric progression of some kind.

It appears to have something to do with one's IP Address according to the following message which appears as a pop-up when the link is depressed:

Quote
Your IP address is shown only to you and moderators. Remember that this information is not identifying, and that most IPs change periodically.

You cannot see other members' IP addresses, and they cannot see yours.

Close window

What does this do?
Why does it appear on some posts and not all posts?

Just curious and wondering if there is some new function which may be useful to me and others.

What Makes an Elder? :
A head of gray hairs doesn't mean one's an elder. Advanced in years, one's called an old fool.
But one in whom there is truth, restraint, rectitude, gentleness,self-control, he's called an elder, his impurities disgorged, enlightened.

Just displays the IP address afaik. Don't know if it would be useful for everyone to see everyone else's IP address. The symbol I think is to show wires I think, as in wired to the hub maybe?

I think 'logged' indicates that the system has 'registered' the IP address - as in recorded and displayed it.  (But not to anyone other than yourself and Mods. )

On one forum someone worked out that there were a dozen or so sockpuppets whose IP addresses all led back to the same source.  So the person concerned could start a thread and then post lots of replies in agreement with themself, making it appear that there was strong supprt for an issue.
It is apparently possible for users to define the country which appears on their IP, or even use an anonymous IP like 'anonymizer.com'.

It's useful for Mods to see if someone is using more than one account, but it is seemingly easy to circumvent if one is IT savvy. Not sure if members would benefit from seeing IP addresses.

Thanks for the reply, Yeshe'.  I remember the sock-puppet episode on another online service.  Forgot.  Part of letting go, I suppose, only in this case due to holes in the hippocampus.  (The organ responsible for short term memory that is at the center of our brain, not the lodgings for large aquatic equines in Africa.)   :nerd:

The latest alleged sockpuppet nonsense was on dorjeshugden.com forum.  Very weird to read the posts after discovering the source - of course the writing style can't be hidden altogether, such as my annoying habit of using 'As for...' to begin a paragraph. ;)

As for the memory thing, I can't remember names & was never much good at it.  There's a name for that condition if only I could remember it! LOL :)

Ah yes: 'Nominal Aphasia' - sounds so much better when my mindlessness has a proper medical-sounding label! :)

Clicking on the word, "logged" opens an ballon to the riddles of the universe, well the forum "logged" feature at least .... Looking at a post YOU made should change the "logged" to an IP Address, such as "123.123.123.123"

As admin, if clicking on the "logged/IP address" it opens up a small report showing which members have posted from that IP address and what errors have been reported from there, like failed logins. That way we can easily see if someone is posing as two or more members, and also if they have tried to hijack other's accounts by just guessing their password. We usually don't dig around in the info about members unless we have good reasons though.

Thanks, Wonky.

Mostly curious about utility.  Not worried too much about Big Brother.  I think the sock-puppet explanation covers the utility part.  Spammers would be another good reason for its use.  Youse guys is doin' a great job!  Thanks for your services.
