Forum Downtime - Please Read
« on: October 16, 2019, 10:36:49 am »
All,

If you've made it to this post, you've figured out that there have been some issues with the site over the last 24 hours or so.  Really sorry about that.  I've been in contact with our host and they are working on the issue.  Right now, the main page is still displaying the "PICARD" message for some reason, but if you visit the forum link directly (essentially bypassing the homepage), you will be able to access the site as usual.

We are working to get this fixed, and I apologize for the inconvenience.  We aren't 100% sure what caused this issue, but are working to get this last item corrected.  I'll update once everything is back to normal.

Take care, everyone!

Everything should be back to normal now.  If you are still experiencing issues, please go ahead and clear your cache/cookies on your browser.  For me, it was showing the error on the homepage until I did that.  Hopefully it won't be an issue for any of you, but wanted to let all of you know, just in case.

If anyone experiences further challenges, please feel free to let me know or post here in this thread.

My browser doesn't like that Freesangha is not a secure site, and this causes problems sometimes.
“You do not need to leave your room. Remain sitting at your table and listen. Do not even listen, simply wait, be quiet, still and solitary. The world will freely offer itself to you to be unmasked, it has no choice, it will roll in ecstasy at your feet.” Franz Kafka

My browser doesn't like that Freesangha is not a secure site, and this causes problems sometimes.

You are correct, this site does not have an SSL certificate, and there are a few reasons for this.  First, there are very few message boards (outside of sites with massive user numbers) that implement SSL to make a forum secure.  Also, we do not ask for or process credit card info, any identifying information (like name, address, etc.), or anything other than an email and password in order to create an account.  This means that paying for an SSL certificate would add significant cost, as those certificates aren't free, to potentially protect information that isn't necessarily sensitive.

As a general rule, if you have a concern about the information you are submitting here, or any other non-SSL site, make sure you use a unique password that you don't use for any other site.  This has long been a basic rule of thumb for creating online accounts, of course, and a good practice to protect yourself.

Hope that helps give some clarity to why the site is set up the way it is.

Hi, meez.

I am running Norton AV  Online Security and there seems to be no problem, whereas I have experienced problems with other (Buddhist) and  other topic sites.

Just thought you might want to know.

What Makes an Elder? :
A head of gray hairs doesn't mean one's an elder. Advanced in years, one's called an old fool.
But one in whom there is truth, restraint, rectitude, gentleness,self-control, he's called an elder, his impurities disgorged, enlightened.
-Dhammpada, 19, translated by Thanissaro Bhikkhu.
