Title: FreeSangha forum upgrade
Post by: Wonky Badger on May 31, 2011, 10:16:10 pm
Since we have experienced a lot of session timeout and verification errors lately, I think it might be time for a major forum upgrade. SMF 2.0 will be released within the coming days (if they can stand by their claims, within hours) and seems to be a good and stable version.

During upgrade there might be some downtime and afterwards some functions that you have gotten used to may be gone or changed (like the portal and chat), as well as there might be new ones and your personal settings might be reset. It will take some time to get everything set up again. The theme will also be a generic one until we work out how to get our own set up. Anyway, the basic forum functions should be left intact and no posts should be lost.

We still have to wait for the SMF release and then I have to read through the upgrade procedure, take backups and find a timeslot where I have enough time for the upgrade and to restore backups in case something goes wrong.

Let me know if you have any thoughts about this.  :namaste:

If you know that it is working well for others and will be an improvement then I would go for it.

My experience of ungrades in general is that they are released too soon and all the bugs get ironed out over time.

The latest 'upgrade' was to my mobile phone from Google, which ruined it. Thier answer was to wait for the next upgrade which would fix the problems they created.  Still, better than an iPhone LOL :)

Guess what I got today when I wandered in here .....

An Error Has Occurred!
Session verification failed. Please try logging out and back in again, and then try again.

Funny thing, I got it when I clicked "MARK ALL MESSAGES AS READ."  And DID NOT get it making this post, even though I did nothing to clear cookies .......... Hmmmmmmm.

PS: After posting this I went back to the Forum main page and clicked the same link. No error, went right through.

Serves you right! Read the messages instead of 'Mark as read'! LOL :)

I haven't experience any problems. However, I haven't used messaging or chat in a long time. What platform(s) are you guys running?

Just a small update; I'm currently collecting backups for the upgrade procedure. If things go smoothly I'll start the upgrade within the next few hours, but I probably won't have time to restore stuff like custom features and the theme. That might take a few days still.

Also been having problems with cookies... can't log in unless I delete everything.

The forum is now upgraded. Highest priorities are to get the portal and chat back online. I hope we have seen the session timeout errors for the last time. Also the theme is prioritized, but we might need to recreate it almost from scratch.

Let me know if there are any other features that you can't live without, and I'll try to get them working as soon as possible.

Still have to delete all my cookies to login in, but I difinitely like the nice clean layout... easier on the eyes.

Are we going to have a "Recent Topics" button?
After "unread posts" and "new replies" it is the button I hit most often.

BTW thanks for all your hard work.

Ditto on that "Recent Topics" button. A lifesaver that is!

Also, thanks for all your time and effort in making this place what it is today!!  :jinsyx:

I managed to get the "Recent Topics" back, as well as the chat, the portal and the spammer block.

And thanks for being here! A forum is nothing without its members.  :namaste:

It's supposed to be a snapshot of the site for those that go directly to freesangha.com. We haven't gotten around to using it in an efficient way, but there is a featured article, the latest posts and admin and mod info there. I always use it to check for new posts. :)

Great job so far. :)

I've just posted a Youtube link and it didn't automatically embed (if that's the term).  No big deal but just to note when the bigger jobs are done and dusted.

What's the portal for?

The portal has enabled me to travel along the space time continuum and discover past lives.  Unfortunately, I trod on a dung beetle in around 4,000 BC which has resulted in the complete absence of inherent existence of everything except my mind.

An incredibly useful device! ;)

By the way, some parts of the forum are not showing up, like the Games and Humor section for example. Have they been discontinued?

As WB and meez know, I wasn't able to view FS at all yesterday.  I could log in, but the page wouldn't load, regardless of browser.  I tried clearly my cache and cookies, and used a couple of computers, but that didn't work either.

However, it is working again now.  I think someone tinkered with the forum's theme so that is missing, but everything else is working as far as I can tell so far.

The problem Yeshe describes was due to that the embedding modification was not installed yet, and the missing subforums and problems to login was due to that our custom template is not compatible with the new forum software version. I've installed the mod and reset all themes os hopefully these problems should be solved now.

Yeshe was describing inter-dimensional time travel.

Now that the embedding modification is in place, you mean -- woo-hoo! -- we log on and are automatically transported across the multi-verse?

I knew this site had potential.

Yes, the chat seems to have taken a timeout. The chat seems to be working towards the server properly, but for some reason the info doesn't show in the windows. I've posted a support request at the SMF forums as I've tried their default fixes without success.

Now the chat should hopefully be working properly.

I just enabled "pretty URLs", meaning that an URL that before looked like www.freesangha.com/forums/index.php?topic=2598 (http://www.freesangha.com/forums/index.php?topic=2598) now looks like http://www.freesangha.com/forums/news-and-announcements/freesangha-forum-upgrade. (http://www.freesangha.com/forums/news-and-announcements/freesangha-forum-upgrade) The point of this is to make URLs more descriptive and search engines will like us a lot more. I remember trying to enable this when we started the forum also, but then it lead to some subforums not working so we had to disable it.

Now it seems to be working fine, but let me know if you have any problems.

The first one (old style) works.  The second one doesn't.

Other than that, no problems!  :cheesy:

Oh... The period of the sentence had ended up added to the end of the link, so that was why it didn't work. Now it should. :)

As I have understood it, it might be normal. It actually leads you to the "Unread posts since last visit" page and that one is cleared of unread posts everytime you log out. But there is a line on that page saying "No unread topics found since your last visit. Click here to try all unread topics", and if you go ahead and click that link I think you'll find what you're looking for.

I guess "Unread Posts" is a bit misleading. I've actually never even noticed those links before! Were they there in the old theme also?

I just added a shoutbox on the main forum to see if there's any interest in it. It's not the same chat room as the normal chat, so that can still be used for a bit more private convos.

Not wanting to perseverate, but I am... The older forum had a new posts button, which would show me everything new. I have not found a button in this new forum that replicates this.
