Title: Is FreeSangha going through another period of change?
Post by: Dharmakara on October 03, 2013, 08:30:09 pm
To all members of FreeSangha: Namo Buddhaya!

As you may have noticed, I have changed my username from "incognito" to "Dharmakara" in an attempt to easy any concern or suspicion of who is using this account.

I'm the same "Dharmakara" that previously served here as an adminstrator with Wonky Badger (Hakan) and Humanitas (Daphne), where the three of us began the over-haul of the forum, it's layout and subforum structure, as well as the core principles that can still be seen in the orientation of FreeSangha:

1. That we would be guided the principle that there is no such thing as a forbidden or tabooed topic for discussion, only inappropriate responses where a poster might lack the maturity to respond in any other fashion --- this is not only the reason that Danger Zone exists, but also allowed the NKT subsection to be established.

2. The second guiding principle is related to the first one, where our intent from the beginning was that all moderators should check their tradition at the door when logging into the forum, that moderation should not be governed by personal tradition and practice, no sooner than it should by preconceived opinions that reflect bias.

Some members of FreeSangha might be of the opinion that I'm here changing things, while others might think that this forum changes moderators in the same fashion that a mother tosses aside a dirty diaper. As for whether or not I'm changing things, the answer to that is NO --- my intent is two-fold: [1] to restore the guiding principles that gave birth to FreeSangha in its current form; and [2] where it's deemed necessary, also encouage those principles through moderation if apprpriate.

As for the issue of changing moderators --- it should be noted, that with the exception of Lobster, all other members of the combined admin/mod team were in fact serving in such capacity when this forum was originally over-hauled with the guiding principles, where we were all participants in moving forward. Of course a couple of the other mods from that time have stepped down since then, either becoming a regular member or benefitting another forum as a moderator.

It's my hope that this will ease any concerns that members might have. There was a time when this forum was the equivalent of one big happy family, the spirit of which I believe can be restored.

With metta and warm regards...

I think that's a very good principle.

Yet, sometimes it's easier said than done --- moderators are no different than anyone else in that regard.

One big positive I've seen with current moderation lately is a lot less LSD/ psylocybin based diatribes from wannabee enlightened sages. Very positive development, when I first joined the seemingly drug induced garbage was dominating certain sections of the forum.

Sure, it's a very challenging role requiring maturity and self-awareness - also the patience of a saint and the skin of a rhinocerous!
And I think that to some extent moderators lead by example, so it's also about "walking the walk."

Spiny, it's really no different than when it comes to the Buddha-dharma, where it needs to be taught by word and by example.  :namaste:

Yes, similar qualities are needed for teaching, though moderation and teaching are separate activities.

I learned from raising five children that "What we are speaks so loudly that they cannot hear what we are saying."  Which addresses the hypocritical axiom:  "Don't do what I do.  Do as I say!"  As this applies to board staff,  staff cannot expect board members to observe the TOS and more importantly, The Precepts, and The Noble Eight Fold Path if staff is not mindfully observing such practices.   :fu:

As for John's comment / complement.  I agree.  The Mods and Admin seem to be doing a great job.  I think it has a great deal to do with the tone set by not only the Admin, but by our board members as well.  It is easier to be a friend, when you are being treated as a friend.  Or as a dear friend once pointed out to me many years ago before moving on to the next realm:  "If you want friends,  you have to be a friend."... :)

In loving memory of my good friend Bob.  May his current experience be rich in The Dhamma and lean in dukkha.

Sorry if that sounds too preachy or sappy, FM named John.  Time tested trite truisms often do!     :-P

Spiny, you were a mod yourself --- didn't you use moderation as a teaching tool, to encourage proper posting behavior?

Yes, at times.  My point though was more about understanding your motivation for putting yourself "back in the driving seat" here at Free Sangha.  Do you intend to use Free Sangha as a teaching forum?  It would be good to know what your intentions are - are you aiming to create another Buddha Forum? http://buddhaforum.org/ (http://buddhaforum.org/)

Spiny, this was actually brought up early on when intitially planning for the content of the Garden Room, whether I would be willing to teach one of the courses, as well as whether any regular member should be permitted to do so --- the answer to both of these questions was a clear and loud "NO", that both would be very inappropriate and unacceptable.

The only people who will be allowed to offer online course and web-seminars will be well-know teachers and authors from a variety of different traditions, all of who will be vetted for personal controversies and scandals before they're even considered as a possible candidate to facilitate a course.

I am an administrator, not a teacher --- the two shall never meet.

Fair enough.  I suppose I was wondering why you would want to run another forum if you're already running one ( Buddha Forum ).   What are your plans for Buddha Forum now?
I think the Garden Room proposal for visiting teachers is a good one, but I'm wondering why you decided against using the Buddha Forum for this?

I'm back in the drivier's seat here because Hakan is currently busy with something else at this time. As for Buddha Forum, it was more of an experiment, to see if if could be restarted --- at the time I took it over there was no traffic at all. Currently, Buddha Forum is closed.

The bottom line is that there's too many forums already out there, so it made more sense to just do it here.

Hello!  I'm writing a paper for my religion class and I was wondering if anyone would be willing to help me with this? I just need a moment of your time to ask a few questions.  I will have to reference your name in this paper also. ;D
