Ok, so far we have mixed reviews.  I'm hearing we'd like some kind of thread scoring, but we don't like the karma feature.

Should I put up a poll?  Should I simply get rid of it?   This is an open ended feature.

We can name it activity, or whatever and we can change the voting method, could be anything from agree/disagree, yay/nay, stars/brownies, etc.  We can have both be positive just different, they do not have to contrast, there does not even have to be a negative vote.  Could be anything.

Do we hate the feature altogether, do we just want to change the name but let the votes into agree/disagree?  If we changed the name from Karma to Activity, like Arya suggested, would this make the feature more useful?

Thanks for all your input.

Ogyen.

Well I noticed some boards will have, "was this statement helpful?" and just a "yes or no" or a thumbs up or down. Which would have less on the impact of people "needing practice".

Ok, I changed "karma" to "Was this helpful" and options are [yes] [no]...

do you we find this more palatable?

I personally prefer it this way, but this is not the board of Matt, what does everyone else think?

The way it's set up you can't differentiate the yes/no anyway, unless we want to... where we can see all the breakdown of yes and no votes.  I'd personally prefer just having totals, but this is not the site of Ogyen either.  LOL...

Please, let us know what you think of this update.

My suggestion would be:

Eliminate the 24 hour post thingy, because we peruse many posts every day by the same folks.  What needs to be limited is any repeating of votes on the same post.

Then (I) would suggest we change the system to check one of four as follows:

Yes( ),  No ( ), Don't Know ( ), Abstain ( ) <---which would be the default.

What Makes an Elder? :
A head of gray hairs doesn't mean one's an elder. Advanced in years, one's called an old fool.
But one in whom there is truth, restraint, rectitude, gentleness,self-control, he's called an elder, his impurities disgorged, enlightened.

I am not a huge fan of the idea. We have the ability to post a response that says "great post", and there are even emoticons for that:  :goodpost: :agree: :offtopic: :feed:

Some of us are stable enough in our not-selves to not be concerned with our popularity rating, in which case the tool does not serve a point. Some of us are really struggling to understand our identity and our role in this universe, and can become very consumed with our popularity rating, in which case this feature would be unhelpful or unwholesome. Me- I vacillate between these two poles, depending on the time of the day, so i know it would be best for me to ignore the rating.

Ron, there aren't enough options to customize this that much.

I think overall, what we're hearing so far is it's a useless feature.  I will leave it up a few more hours,

Inserted poll:

Options to choose from:

1. if you love it
2. You don't care whether it's there or not.
3. You kind of like it kind of don't.
4. You hate it.
5. You feel and urge to vote about not voting.

I have been swayed by your arguments. I'm going to vote 'no' and keep relying on the emoticon commentary system.

Warning: I'm enough of a fundamentalist Tibet style Buddhist to believe that for the last 1,000 years Tibet has produced a handful of enlightened masters in every generation. I do not ask that YOU believe it, but it will greatly simplify conversations if you understand that about me. Thanks.

More than 5 negatives on this is enough for the administration to decide it's not worth the trouble.  Karma meter and buddy lists have been disabled to not promote any favoritisms in the forum.

Thank you all for your input!

By the way... here in Portland, both flying monkeys and rolling donuts are a serious problem. A buddy of mine was run over by a runaway rolling donut, needed stitches. And flying monkey attacks are becoming an almost daily thing. The more humans encroach upon their habitat, the more the flying monkeys retaliate.

Yuck!! Just what Life needs. More judging, subjectivity, clique-building, status, social climbing .....

Yuck!! Have always ignored them if implemented, but wouldn't even consider the like as a personal choice.
...i found there was no "i" anywhere.....
