Great Buddha at Todaiji temple cleaned
« on: August 10, 2013, 05:22:20 am »

The Great Buddha at Todaiji temple has been given a thorough clean ahead of the Bon festival in Nara, western Japan.
The soul of the Buddha had to be temporarily removed before the ritual could take place, as Verity Wilde explains.

If I recall correctly, it was reported that the devout practitioners involved in this have a tendency to develope very severe respiratory problems due to the removal of the incense resin, some being cancerous in nature.

i don't know how cleaning the resin would cause Respitory cancer.(since they only clean for a short time)

I have heard that monks or nuns in the temple have gotten cancer after many years of burning of these incenses.

why cant they make non cancerous incense?
like honey and glee/butter like stuff in the old day.

Any kind of smoke from plant material is carcinogenic, not just tobacco, but fireplace logs, marijuana, incense, forest fire smoke etc.
to me, the signs of a successful practice are happiness and a cessation of suffering, buddhism often gives me this; not all the answers.

Yea your right.
maybe we should start burning our incense outdoors before entering the temple.

Maybe we should just stop burning things period because it's not good for the environment either --- take the burning of "hell notes" for example.

I believe it was something related to the dust and air-borne particles they were breathing as they clean --- true, it's a short amount of time, but it's a short amount of time repeated over many years. One solution is that they're now wearing face masks when they clean and that certainly makes a difference when it comes to potential health problems down the line.

NOPE cant go cold turkey.
seriously we are the human race we have to burn something  :onfire: or the human race will cease to exist 2moro.

seriously though I agree i'm not to big on burning things either, although some guys (Shingon/Tibetan sects) who do Fire Pujas would have a heart attack at hearing that.
