China's Shaolin Temple builds business empire

China's famed Shaolin Temple has set up over 40 companies overseas as it hopes to spread Buddhist-inspired martial arts around the globe, state press reported.

But the announcement of a vast business plan to send the temple's famed warrior monks abroad has been met with criticism over the commercialisation of Buddhism, the Global Times said on Monday.

Shaolin Temple Launches E-commerce Site

By Steven Schwankert, IDG News

Shaolin Temple, regarded as the site where Chinese martial arts originated, has opened an online store on Alibaba.com's Taobao retail site.

"Shaolin Stage of Joy" features a host of items for purchase, including Shaolin sweatbands (29 yuan, US$4.22), Zen rock garden sets (95 yuan) and collectible sets priced as high as 9,999 yuan. The site is designed only for Chinese consumers, and has no English version or international shipping yet. Shaolin's official Web site does not yet link to the online store.

I think I understand some of the history behind the monks developing the martial arts, but it will be the ultimate irony if many people throughout the world think of fighting and combat instead of peace when they see a symbol of the Buddha.
