Title: Beginning Nichiren Buddhism?
Post by: liveforstatic on April 07, 2013, 06:38:30 pm
I have such an interest in it and I want to give it a try and see if it’ll be a good fit for me. However, I have no idea where to start, what to get, where to go. Anyone who is a firm believer and practices it, do think you can lend me a hand on how to start or how to go about approaching it?

Welcome to FreeSangha, liveforstatic. I hope you enjoy your time here.

You did not disclose your geographic location, so I suggest checking out this directory to see if any Nichiren groups are near you: (
Click on your continent, then your country, and then state or region.

I think one of our members is knowledgeable about Nichiren practices, but is not a follower of that tradition. I notice there are several members at DharmaWheel who are Nichiren practitioners, you might enjoy seeking company there: (

I extracted an article wriiten by me in another forum.Just my humble sharing for your reading(Discretion);

"The Nichiren Buddhism schools in Singapore are generally listed as follow:
 1)Nichiren Shu-(Layman Description -"the oldest order and closer to Mainstream Buddhism.)
 2)Nichiren ShoShu-(Layman Description -"broke off from Nichiren Shu,it revised and set its new direction/interpretation of Nichiren Buddhism,"cut off tie" with Mainstream Buddhism and Soka)
 3)Soka-(LayMan Description-"Very similar in term of rituals and practise with Nichiren Shoshu. In 1991 ,Nichiren Shu and Soka Cut off tie due to sensitive issues. They are very active in global charitable events.Well organised.)
Soka is the most popular among the three schools, follow by ShoShu and Nichiren Shu.The members of the 3 schools are generally nice, helpful and devoted in learning and spreading the teaching.Pls note that Nicheren ShoShu and Soka members chanted six beat Diamuko(Lotus Sutra Title) while Nichiren Shu{The original Nichiren School }chanted 7 beat Diamuko.
I have interacted with members from three schools. They are very successful in thier private life.On the other hand, thier knowledge in Buddhism is good. They are kind and nice people.
Members from ShoShu and Soka strongly and strictly believe in their respective schools/guidance thus U would hardly find any traditional or mainstream Buddhism there.Nevertheless, the members are equally compassionated(like any Buddhists) in helping others and doing charity.
ShoShu members strongly abide to the High Priests' teaching, while Soka members follow their present layman Leader/Teacher Mr.Ikeda guidance. Pls note ShoShu and Soka has some sensitive issues therefore the respective members may not be in good terms.
The late High Monk "Sheng Yan Fu Shi ", ever wrote an article of his earlier impression on Nichiren Buddhism -from ShoShu/Soka perspective-negative compare with mainstream Buddhism. However, years later he persued further studies in Buddhism , Japan -Nichiren Shu Uni.Sheng Yan Fu Shi realised that traditional Nichiren Buddhism & mainstream Buddhism has similar elements and he was greatly amazed with the profound teachings of Nichiren(Founder) and impressed with Nichiren devotion to Lord Buddha(Eternal Buddha) and the Lotus Sutra."-Extracted from (

Note:The above article is just my personal opinion and I respect all the Nichiren Buddhism Schools.

The Nichiren Buddhism teaches the devotees to chant Diamuko(Namu Myoho Renge Kyo -南無妙法蓮華經, also, in some schools Nam Myoho Renge Kyo; To Honour/devote oneself to the Wonderful Law of the Lotus Flower Sutra) is a mantra that is chanted as the central practice of all forms of Nichiren Buddhism, is able transform one karma and accumulate good merits.

The related links for the respective Nichiren Buddhism Schools are as follow(Please apply discretion when reading/visiting the website):
