Most people can follow the 1st & 2nd precept sufficiently for meditation practise. For example, zapping a few insects won't affect much.

The most important precept is the 3rd precept about sexual misconduct. If this isn't sorted out clearly in the mind, little real progress will be made with meditation because hindrances won't cease.

When sex is straightened out, drugs & alcohol will fall away.

Because Buddhist teacher$ are interested in building as many follower$ as po$$ible, they treat the most important precept as the least important precept.

As for the 4th precept, namely, honest speech, a person should only speak about what they really know to be true & real.

For example, ideas about reincarnation, etc, are false speech.  :namaste:

Quote
Bhikkhus, these four ways of expression are not noble. What four?

The not seen he says I saw, the not heard he says I heard, the not experienced he says I experienced and the not cognized he says I cognized. Bhikkhus, these four ways of expression are not noble.
