Hi poto, your idea is great.  We already have that policy in place; all mods are supposed to record the reason for action under the post for the sake of transparency.

But thank you!

Kindly,
Laura

I dunno. I just found this forum a few days ago. I haven't seen any posts disappear yet, but I'm sure deletions are bound to happen sooner or later. I was just curious about policy, and suggesting what I have seen work well on other other forums to help foster an open atmosphere.

Thanks poto, I haven't seen it happen yet though I've seen threads moved to "The Danger Zone," sometimes at the requests of members.  We'll talk about it, in case such drastic instances arise.

Kindly,
Laura

To add my :twocents:

In the spirit of openness and transparency, it would be nice to see all moderator actions logged. Whenever a post or thread is modified or deleted, those actions should be recorded for all to see in a public moderator sub-forum. Also, when a user is banned, the action should be logged and an appeals process established. A 'moderation actions' sub-forum should also allow users to openly debate the moderator's activities, rather than refusing to allow any public questioning of mods as some other forums have done.

I believe this level of transparency, while slightly more work for the moderation team, is more in keeping with Buddhist concepts of openness.

All moderators actions are logged.  In fact, all members actions are logged.  For the sake of not having too many hands in the kitchen these logs have not been made public since they are administrator functions and not moderator functions.  These logs not being made public as of now doesn't mean that they're hidden or that they're in any way off limits to members, just from a practical standpoint it hasn't yet been an issue.  Since the site has been starting out we have encouraged a great deal of transparency, and if people would feel better we can make a subforum in moderator's contact forum where there are daily logs of moderator activity.  This could be managed, but it requires a good deal of work on my or Wonky Badger's time as it is an administrative function and not a moderator's function in the system, and please understand we do this for free and have full-time jobs and families and life as well...  If the increase in current work load for maintenance of the site is minimal, then we will be happy to accomodate.  If it's too intensive to maintain daily, we could go on a request basis, that is if it's more than "slightly more work" please understand there are two of us admin'ing.  That is if someone feels they must know what the moderator activities have been, we (the admins) can provide these logs for their own peace of mind upon request.  Considering this may not be a daily frequency thing it might be easier to simply manage on a need-to-know basis.  That is when you feel you need to know you let us know and we give you the information you are asking.

Thoughts?  Please let us know.

I haven't ever run a SMF forum, only vb and phpbb, so I'm not familiar with the admin backend. If it's too much trouble to dump the log files, then maybe requiring mods to post brief descriptions of their actions in the mod sub-forums would work. I understand that could be burdensome too. It was just a suggestion, based on things I have seen done on other forums.

I have no opinion about a log. I am wondering: what if moderators left a note in the thread if they modify, edit, or delete any post. So anyone reading the thread can see the actions of moderators within the context of the action.

When you edit a post, there is a little field you can fill in in modify post view: Reason for edit:

I have already asked moderators (maybe a few weeks ago?) in the global moderator's board to please include their reason for modification whenever altering posts/threads not their own, if you visit the thread you can find it.

Hope this helps/clarifies.

Joy, I'll see if I can find a solution.

Thanks, Wonky Badger.  It's very much appreciated.

Sometimes eyestrain from "visual clutter" can trigger migraines.  Mostly haven't had those beasts for about a decade, but I have to limit known triggers.  It's always nice when I can adjust a site so that it's easy on the eyes.  I do know how to hit the esc key to stop the moving gif images -- those things are awful for me while trying to read.

Say, you wouldn't happen to be related to that badger (http://bitterrootbadger.wordpress.com/) in Montana would you?

I couldn't find a solution right off, but I've asked at the SMF community if anyone would know of a good solution to this. I didn't know you could hit the esc key to stop them! I'll have to remember that one!

I checked that blog page, but the face didn't look familiar, although the picture was a bit blurry. It looks a bit like my great great uncle that emigrated and were never heard from again, so it might be one of his descendants.

I found a way to disable smileys! The nice people at the SMF forum helped me. Go to your profile. Under "Modify Profile" there is "Look and Layout Preferences". There set "Current Smiley Set" to "No Smileys" and press "Save". Done!

It's my turn to apologize, I thought this had been tried.  Now I feel like a goof... I should have said something, I knew how to disable smileys that way... just for some reason got confused that somehow said way was not working for the person.  We should add this note to tech forum.  WB, I'm copying your post and putting it in the database-thread for beginners in Tech.

Well, I did have to tick some box somewhere in the Admin section for members to be allowed to to so, so I don't think it was possible before. So no need to apologize.

Once you can upgrade to the new 2.0 version that will open up a whole world of cool little things you can do. The one thing I would suggest is a new theme with custom buttons, and logo once you get that figured out. Just a personal preference though but I never like default themes..lol.
