Title: "session verification failed" page
Post by: santamonicacj on March 27, 2011, 04:39:19 pm
Sometimes when I try to post I get a page that says something like, "Sessions verification failed. Please try logging out and back in again, then try again."

I've tried to click on 'logout' but it doesn't log me out.

This happens only sporadically. What's the problem?

Yes, I too have been getting this when trying to reply to PM's, replying to messages, even when trying to log out as the messages suggests.

On the Mac it occurs with Safari and Firefox ......  On both the only fix I've found so far is to manually delete any "cookies" associates with this site. CLose the browser and restart, come to FS and log in.

I frequent other SMF forums and they have no similar issues.

After posting the above, the Session Verification monster grabbed me and clawed me until I gave up all my cookies; again!  Occurring more frequently it seems.

:teehee: it just happened to me, too. As JMc and I are experiencing this at the same time, I wonder if it is an event rather than a process? Also, you mentioned Mac. I'm on Mac/Safari too. SantaM?

Mac/Safari.

I also get a "Session timed out. Please try to resubmit your post" even if it has only been a second or two.

It has been intermittent over a period of weeks for me. I don't think it is an event. We must've pissed off the wrong spirit!

I've had this experience off and on too. It is interesting to see that 3-4 of us are reporting the same experience at the same time, that's why I'm suggesting some Internet event. As always, I blame conspiracy theroies...

I've also encountered it 2-3 times. I have no idea what could be the cause, but I haven't changed anything in the software in a long time, so it could be server related. I'll google around and see what I can find.

SMF used to have a decent user's forum, but I have been there in more than 2 years. Might check them out for answers.  They used to have issues with new patches adding goofy issues like this ..... (about to press POST button - fingers crossed!)

It is almost as if there is a sudden overload when posting, which then crashes it.

I've also has problems with my smartphone, which can't handle the site unless on wifi.

I automatically save the text of any post or pm using 'copy' just in case of a crash, before posting it.

Wonky,

If there is something we need to check into from the host side, let me know and I will be glad to.

Wonky,

I might have been hasty about assuming that it has something to do with the server.

I'm going to see if I can do something based on JMcK's SMF threads. There was some posts there suggesting to update some template files that had added code for session IDs. The problem is that since we have manual edits in our files, I can't just copy over them, but have to manually merge the new code with the old, which might take some planning.

Ok, three times today I have had to delete ALL the Freesangha cookies, logout and then log in.  Getting kind of annoying.

BTW: There appear to be TWO cookies in Safari, but BOTH must be removed to end the error.

Sorry about that. I have no idea why the problem seems to be getting worse. Please just hang in there for another week. I'm studying quite hard for a test right now and if I flunk it, I'll have to wait an entire year before I get another chance at it. It's coming Friday, so after that my schedule will be back to normal. If I tried to fix the problem right now and something went wrong, it might be that the forum would end up being completely down (or at least less usable than it is now) for a week.

Maybe there is a setting, as on Firefox, which does that for you when you end each session.

I was trying to modify a post of mine in the Tea Room and got "session timeout". So at some point I'd like to slightly modify that post even if it is beyond the time limit, as I tried to modify it well within the time limit. It isn't a big deal, just an edit for clarification.
(edit)
Never mind, I got it to work.

'Session timeout'?

'Session verification failed'?

Sounds like my sex life! LOL :)

And I still can't open up the site on my smartphone, whichever browser I use, unless I use wifi, which would indicate that something is too large to handle.  So back to my sex life again! LOL :)

I've updated all files to the latest version now, so hopefully the problem is fixed. There is a small risk that our custom template might have some code that does not take session id into account, so if you still see this problem let me know and I'll start comparing the code of the SMF default template with the code of our custom template.

If the problem is seen again, it would help if you let me know exactly on which page you were and what link you clicked when it happened.  :namaste:

Ajahn Brahmavamso tells a story about a new, multi-million dollar computer upgrade that NASA was trying to install. It was all set up, and they pushed the start button. It didn't work. A considerable amount of techno stuff later, and still no go. One of the technicians was a devout Thai Buddhist, and suggested that maybe the problem was supernatural and might benefit from the intervention of a monk. The crew was growing desperate, so they agreed to allow a Thai monk to come in and do some chanting. The monk chanted his blessings for an hour, and presto! The system started right up.

How come I can post in this thread and not another?
Title: Re: "session verification failed" page
Post by: Wonky Badger on April 27, 2011, 10:35:57 pm
I have to admit that I don't know exactly what's going on. Initially it seemed like the problem appeared because a session id was missing in some link addresses in the code, but I've gotten the session verification error even when the session id has been included in the address. I will open a support request thread at the SMF forum to try to get help with the problem.

When you get the error could you please copy down the following information:

Type of error
"Session timeout", "Session verification failed" or something different?
Page where the the error appeared
If using PC, mark up the address in the browser address bar and press Ctrl+C or right-click the marked text and choose "Copy". Open a text editor and press Ctrl+V or right-click and choose paste. If Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V doesn't work, you can try Ctrl+Ins and Shift+Ins instead. I have no idea how to do it on a Mac. The "Copy" and "Paste" commands can usually also be chosen from the browser's "Edit" menu if there is one.
The previous page
Click the browser "Back" button and repeat the above process
Browser
Let me know what internet browser you're using

This is what a "report" might look like (from one of my encounters with the error):

Session verification failed
http://www.freesangha.com/forums/index.php?action=post;quote=38448;topic=2506.0;num_replies=2; (http://www.freesangha.com/forums/index.php?action=post;quote=38448;topic=2506.0;num_replies=2;)sesc=x

Firefox

Note the part I've highlighted in red! If your link contains "sesc" (session check), be sure to remove/replace the following string of letters and numbers. This is your session ID, and I suspect that if you post it, it could possibly be used by someone else to post and do other stuff in your name.

EDIT: I just ran a repair_settings script that was recommended over at the SMF site, but I don't know if it did any good. I'll wait with opening a support request over there until someone sees the error again, just to be sure that the problem is still present.

A SMF support guy has suggested that I rename the cookie to see if that solves the problem. The cookie formerly known as FreeSangha60 will now be named ChocolateChip. Let me know if the problem is still there after the renaming. Renaming it will mean that everyone that has ticked something like "stay logged in" will have to login again.

EDIT: You might get the error just because I changed the name of the cookie (just now). Logout/Login once and then if you still see the problem, let me know.

I tried to remove the "sesc" part from the address in the code, but then I got the verification error every time. Still waiting for suggestions in the SMF forum. It might be that when SMF 2.0 goes live, we'll migrate to that software version to get rid of this problem.

A support guy in the SMF forum suggested that I change some cookie settings. As I've done that just now, I await any further reports on this problem.  :namaste:

I gotta be more careful about what I post. Sometimes I post, read what I've said, and can't go back to edit it!

So my apologies for being more pig-headed than usual. It's because I can't always edit!

That's a hopeless, helpless feeling, isn't?  Please just PM one of the moderators and I am sure someone will alter the wording per your request.

There's a grace period of a minute or two during which you may edit your post and after that it is fixed as is.  You can imagine why this is a good idea in most situations.

OS 10.6.7 Safari and I'm screwed regularly. (Although you wouldn't know it by how often I post. I'm not working currently.)

Isn't Firefox the same as Safari? I'm dumb about computers.

.......

Isn't Firefox the same as Safari? I'm dumb about computers.

Firefox is a Mozilla browser that is free and open sourced.  It has roots in the Netscape browser.  It is more stable and secure than MS Internet Explore if on a Winblows platform.  On Mac there are some websites so poorly designed that they only work fully with IE or FF.  I have both on all my Macs and at one time FF was the default.  That changed as they went one way and Safari improved.  I still use FF for maybe three sites and that is it.

For foreign sites that don't have an English version I use Google's Chrome because it has built-in translation of pages. I've used Opera, Camino, but have never considered putting IE on a Mac.  Safari 5 currently has 0 vulnerabilities (as does FF & Chrome).

Firefox 4.0.1 on Windows here and no problems at all.

Stopped using IE years ago.  I updated it a few months ago and it corrupted itself. latest update works but I have zero faith in it.

Chrome and Safari confuse me with their simplicity - bit like Zen.  LOL :)

Can't speak for Chrome, but used Safari on a Bill-Gates-Insult OS and it was a hog, pig and wallowing buffalo all at the same time. The improvement using it on a Mac is breathtaking!!

Sounds good, J.  Glad you aren't having issues with it any longer.

I use Chrome on my Windows PC because it does seem to be the least bogged down browser for that platform.  On my Mac's I use Firefox or Safari.

Well, since Santa and I are on the same platform I would rule out the browser completely. Add-on Extensions might give a variance in causing this.  But so strange that my last repeat is back over a month now.

You may be on the same platform as Santa but are you catching the same train?  LOL :)

I had loads of similar problems due to wifi and memory issues and also because of the policy of broadband suppliers to dump you onto a low 'profile' once you're tied to them, which can slow up and destabilise it.

Once I spoke to the technical guy in Delhi (after speaking to a dozen or so idiots who wanted me to check I had stuff plugged in) he tweaked my modem settings, restored me to a high profile and now I have quadruple the speed, stability and nothing freezes .............................. of course that could be famous last words! ;)

I tried this but the formatting usually gets lost.  But if I am in the middle of a lengthy post and get timed out, I sometimes lose the text.   :comp: :pc1:

Best to keep posts short and to the point.   :)

I've sometimes had to go right back to the thread and start again with a Reply or Quote.  Copying has saved me lots of time - but then I ramble in wordy posts, as you know! ;)

I just highlight everything in the grey box, use the browser's 'Copy' then click anywhere in the grey box to remove the highlighting, then Post.

If it chugs along and freezes, I can usually not Post again without reloading the page, but then all I have to do is Paste and then Post.

I use Firefox, but I've found the same on Chrome, Explorer etc.
