Title: Are we no longer allowed to edit mistakes in our own posts?
Post by: Boodust on March 28, 2010, 10:30:26 am
 :namaste:

Are we no longer able to edit mistakes and typos in our own posts? Just wondering.

There are no mistakes in Buddhism. Typos are a consequence of karma.  :teehee:

Could another member confirm that this feature is missing? The button might have just moved to a different location. If it is missing, we'll kick it up to the fix-it department.

TESTING the "Modify" capability. THis was the Original post.

This is immediately after clicking "Modify."

It seems that in some subforums modifying is allowed while in others it isn't.

That is a Forum Permissions setting issue ..... THIS WAS ALSO FROM LICKING "Modify"

In Mahayana> Chan / Zen /Sheon / Thien I had already modified a text. But upon seeing a further typo I was then no longer allowed to edit. The modify button was gone.

There is a Setting called "Courtesy edit wait time" that allows editing for as long as the setting. Once that time passes, no "Modify" allowed.

I just made a testing post over there and was able to modify it even three times.  Maybe it's related to the limited editing time available?

5 min passed, modified it two more times. Perhaps it's due to karma or merit?? :-P

35 min passed and I was still able to modify my post.

Actually, it seems to last about 2 hours since I can edit only a few of my last posts within this thread.

Well, I guess it is all small fish. anyway I am used to posting in a forum in which once something is posted one cannot edit a smidgen. There one can delete,  but that is it. So even a small window of opportunity is appreciated. I thought there was some glitch. Or that it was a programming thing related to the fact that I am on a Mac.  :smack:

I just checked regular member settings, and you are able to modify your own posts, that permission is enabled.  Please advise if you continue to experience issues.

At first they let us modify at any time, but then there was one guy that would be called on some b.s. and then modified his post to say something different. In other words one person abused the privilege. So they changed it. He's since been banned, I believe.

I checked the settings and it was set to 3 hours. I don't know if that was an install default or if it was set after that incident you mentioned. Anyway, I disabled it for now, so it should be possible for you to edit your posts whenever. I haven't discussed this with the rest of the staff so it might be, if they have objections, that we'll enable the timer again.

There is also a "Courtesy edit wait time" of 90 seconds. If edited before that, the post will not be logged as edited, but if edited afterwards it will state the date and time that it was last edited. There is also a small box where you can enter the reason for editing, which I would encourage you to use to avoid misunderstandings or suspicion by other members in heated topics.

Things seem back in place  ... thank you! Maybe no one will abuse it

No one should be responsible for their bad grammer ... she's old enough to know better.

You can always install a spell-checker.  :-P

There is a spell check next to your post button.  If you look down, you'll see Post, Preview, Spell Check.

Courtesy edit WAIT time 90 seconds
Maximum time after posting to allow edit 0 (this means it's disabled and you can edit any post any time any where that you posted)

I don't know why you can't post after a few hours that is strange.

Will update.

I have briefly browsed this thread and it appears, that in the last few days, this phenomena has struck again. I no longer seem to have the 'modify' button.

One should not be allowed to modify ones posts after a certain time period, ones posts should remain carved in stone as a monument to their stupidity (or in my case their brilliant intelligence)  :D

We decided to try a 2 hour post edit limit. After that the post is locked. I hate to find a spelling mistake and not being able to correct it, but if someone decides to start rewriting or deleting the content of their posts days or weeks after they posted it, it completely messes up the flow and coherence of the entire thread. So I think the drawback is minor compared to the potential mess we've prevented byt the limitation. If one notices a grave or embarrassing mistake, one may always ask a mod to correct it if the time limit has passed.

Mistakes and errors should be banned. Legislate perfection; outlaw imperfection; mandatory compliance and excellence .....
