Title: Self-confidence and Arrogance

The primordial nature of human being is virtuous. With continuous accumulation, and with practicing the slightest good deed instead of passing up it, one can definitely complete all good deeds. This can be done by everybody, or everybody has such ability. Realizing such can make us be fully confident of ourselves.

Affliction is not our primordial nature; it arises abruptly, similar as the cloud in the sky, which can disperse. It is the karmic impression ever since the beginningless kalpas, but can still be corrected through practice, and be destroyed through wisdom. We might not eradicate afflictions all at once, but with wisdom we can remove it gradually until finally purify it. We should also be confident about this.

What we are talking about here is also the reality of all phenomena. Our original mind is pure and our primordial nature is virtuous, while the affliction comes all of a sudden, just like the cloud suddenly appears in the sunny sky. We have lost our self-nature, but through practice and the change of mind, the primordial virtue and purity will manifest, and the afflictions and karmic hindrances will be eliminated. Only after knowing this truth, can you arouse the faith, and only by then can you have self-confidence. What you have said before like “I can complete all good deeds and destroy all afflictions” is just causal talking and thinking, since you had not really built up firm faith and did not have real confidence.

Modern people are used to saying: “I’m quite confident of myself!” In fact, this is not self-confidence, but arrogance. This is a kind of affliction, also the defilement to the continuity. We cannot mix self-confidence and arrogance, which are totally different. Affliction is a state of ignorance while self-confidence is a state of enlightenment. When facing external objects such as difficulties, arrogance will waver and change; but the real self-confidence will not change or waver, no matter how big the difficulties or obstacles are. 

While facing our living and work, our life and future, we shall be full of confidence. Self-confidence is the source of success and the basis of accomplishment. Today many people are only arrogant rather than confident. Relying on arrogance, you will surely fail and descend; relying on self-confidence, you will definitely succeed and consummate.

From my experience this is not true.  Buddha said that it was not true, when he stated that there were no origins, not to the universe and not to the mind.  Think of mind as but a field property of the central nervous system.  Just as all of existence arises, dwells for but a time and passes away, so does mind.  Mind is no permanent entity, therefore it has no origin, and no end.  It is but a process constantly arising, waxing and waning, in and out of consciousness.  When unbinding and release is attained, mind disperses, consciousness disappears.

What do you mean by "consciousness disappears"?

My understanding is that when we fall asleep, are drugged into narcosis, are knocked out, die, and when we unbind and release we lose consciousness.  Think of it like the lights going out when there is a power outage.  Since one unbound and released is no longer subject to kamma and kamma vipakha, intentional action and effects, then consciousness, which a result of an aware mind ceases to function.

Hi there Melodious Conch, you make some good points. A good point about Buddhist faith (saddhā/śraddhā), (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faith_in_Buddhism) for example. Another is about afflictions.

I understand afflictions as the Kleshas (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kleshas_(Buddhism)). They exist, they are part of our existence. We need to deal with them, it matters not if they are considered original mind or primordial nature.

Another way is to follow the historic Buddha by example, through his teachings in the Pali cannon. He shows a more pragmatic approach to overcoming the difference between self-confidence and arrogance.

Though, at the end of the day it is about what works for you.
