Khenpo Tamgrin Rinpoche :

Why many people are unwilling to practice evening recitations? Because they don’t understand how deep the evil karma they have made previously is, as well as how heavy the evil karma they have made the current day is. Without a repentant mind and a driven power for confession, they do not have the willingness to practice recitation. Or even doing reluctantly, they will just follow slackly without any wish and enjoyment.


There is also a small quantity of people, who looks a little spirited and seemingly filled with bliss. However, they are not confessing the evil karma and mistakes they have made but are simply thinking of the merits and profit the practice might bring them, which is just a kind of self-amusing and self-assuring rather than real filling with bliss.


During confession one shall contemplate like this:”not to mention the evil karma I have made previously, even the wrong doings I made today will be enough to pull me to hell...”, meantime a frightened feeling and a strong sense of repentance will arise, this is the real confession. However, for many people, as the time passes they are becoming less and less repentant and almost turn to buddhistic sophisticates. If they continually practice like this and do not adjust themselves, they will fall into a dangerous state where even Dharma can hardly moderate, subdue and save them. 


Dharma can moderate and subdue anybody except for buddhistic sophisticates, and Dharma can change anybody except for those sophisticates. Those people have been immersed in Dharma for so long time and seemingly know all the theories, however, since Dharma has not merged into their continuities, whatever supreme Dharma will not work on them. This is very terrible that even the 1000 Buddhas of good eon come simultaneously, they cannot get saved. Therefore we must confess and try our best to get Dharma merged into our continuities. For one who really wants to get liberated and enlightened, it is extremely important.

Apparently those who know theory only and who have not merged Dharma into their continuities.

I think Bunyan spoke of Mr Talkative, or some such guy, in Pilgrims Progress.

Maybe the general idea is to be more concerned with our own practice than that of others, and judgements of it?

Melodious Conch, could I ask a another question? Is Khenpo Tamgrin Rinpoche seeking -  in his dharma talk you quote - to address ALL Buddhists? Or is it what I would call an "in-house" talk made to those who aspire to his own particular tradition?

Compliantly rejoice with “Cobblers Apprentice”. the understanding is quite right.
“buddhistic sophisticate” is the person who seems knowing many theories, but his mind is full of prides. They don’t know how to use Dharma to correct their bad habits. Dharma and his continuity, as well as practice and his life, are all separated.

Following is some extraction from the book “The words of my perfect teacher” by Patrul Rinpoche, which gives further explanations:
“Anyone who follows a teacher and receives his teachings ought to be like a piece of cloth being soaked in dye. As he learns to emulate the actions of his respected master, there should certainly be some noticeable change from how he was before. When a piece of cloth is dyed, it may take the new colour more or less successfully-but how can it fail to change colour at all? Nowadays, there are people who have received the Dharma hundreds of times but who still fail to improve themselves in the least, and behave exactly like ordinary worldly people in all respects. All the Dharma has produced is impervious practitioners, violators of samaya.
It is said:
The Dharma can inspire evildoers to change, but it cannot inspire practitioners who have become impervious through Dharma-just as grease can soften stiff leather, but cannot soften the leather of a butter-bag. “

As practitioners, all of us shall always reflect ourselves so that we are not becoming such “buddhistic sophisticates”.

It is addressed to all, not even the Buddhists.
Although in Vajrayana Buddhism, after reached a certain level, some teachings are prohibited to be disclosed to the people who are not empowered (the purpose is to avoid blinded slanders which will cause the person who might give such slanders to fall, since they cannot understand). However, at present age, many Buddhists do not have even the most basic right view, such as the difficulty to get a human life, the impermanence of human life, the cause and effect etc. They merely pursue and practice the teachings higher than their level. Since they have not seriously learned or contemplated the basic theories and do not have a right view, the learning will just end up with failure. The practice they are doing just have the form, but no reality, thus no real progress can be made. This is a big problem in today’s Dharma practicing.
Rinpoche noticed this defect through his visit in Han area in China about 12 years ago. He found many Han practitioners were eager to learn, to practice, however, they do not have proper guidance, what they did was actually “blind practice”, which will not only provide no help in their liberation, but make them commit even more evil doings due to lack of right view. To save these so-called practitioners, Rinpoche decided to learn Mandarin and give teaching in Mandarin. His public teaching mainly focus on the Four Preliminary Practices of Tibetan Buddhism (which is basically what most current practitioners have neglected to learn)to help people establish right view, establish solid foundation, so that they can go farther in Buddhism learning.
The quotes I posted here are mainly within such basic topic, and are what I believe the most proper advices to suit current practitioners’ capacity.
Rinpoche has made an aspiration to spread the teaching of “Pure Land and Dzogchen” to the world within 10 years. And relevant translation work is going on.

It would appear that one's own understanding and practice has already come apart in this life, especially if that "understanding" deems it appropriate to use a pejorative in describing another person.

A pejorative (also called a derogatory term, derogative term, a term of abuse, or a term of disparagement) is a word or grammatical form expressing a low opinion of someone or something, or showing a lack of respect for someone or something. It is also used as a criticism, hostility, disregard and/or disrespect --- in other words, the context of referring to someone as a "sophisticate" is specifically derogatory in nature, where it would be no different if one were to refer to the Theravada tradition as Hinayana with malice.

With that said, it should also be noted that there's very little tolerance on the forum when it comes to this kind of behavior.

As I see it, at the heart of the "sophisticate" is the failure to transform theory into practice; in that sense we are all sophisticates at times. I would look towards mutual encouragement rather than imply a division into what another Faith has called the "sheep" and the "goats".

Thank you for the reminding. The translation of the word might have some problem. The meaning of the word in Chinese is “the person who can hardly be transformed”, while being translated, there might be some deviation to its original meaning. Will forward your words to the translator, to see whether they can find some better expressions. Personally, I feel “impervious practitioners” is better. Thanks again.

I assumed it was a translational issue right from the beginning, hoping that this was the issue and that it wasn't something deliberate.

Personally, I feel “impervious practitioners” is better.

I usually refer to it as "dharma impairment".
