Will the Realization Remain after Enlightenment?
« on: October 21, 2015, 07:57:04 pm »
 :r4wheel:Khenpo Tamgrin Rinpoche:

Question:
After enlightenment, will the realization remain or will it change as the environment changes?

Answer:
It depends. Generally speaking, there will not be the retrogression if one practices step by step through the paths of joining, accumulating, seeing, meditation and beyond learning. Such way of practice needs a process, which is quite long.

There is also another situation, say, in Great Perfection or Zen, when the elimination of bad karma and accumulation of merits of the disciple has reached a certain level, and he also has very strong faith in the Guru, the Guru might help him realize the nature of mind through some pith instructions. Jigme Phuntsok Rinpoche has said, after you have realized the nature of mind, to retreat for 7 days to keep that state, and after 7 days it would be almost stabilized and would not retrogress any more.

Previously Bodhisattva Asanga had no supernatural power and could not fly, then Lord Maitreya through his own supernatural power took him to the Tushita paradise. Why could Bodhisattava Asanga fly? It was Lord Maitreya who through his power had him fly. This is an analogy. Relying on the Guru’s blessings and pith instructions can directly take one to that realm, and have him enter that state.

But the “7 days retreat with no retrogression” is also not that certain. One might realize the nature of mind through the Guru’s pith instructions, but without continuous practicing to keep that state, the enlightenment will also retrogress.

No. Realization is a flash of the brain waking up. That is just the beginning of one's path. At this point it is advantageous to have a spiritual guide who has walked the path. Meditation becomes the first key, then there is walking with no mind. Soon one will be able to walk out into the world and keep the mind open, their heart open. Enlightenment is just another name for becoming a whole human being. There are no distinctions once one has crossed the river. Keep your mind open with no roof noise. Then someday you will drop your practice....thus having attained "enlightenment" which is also something that can never be possessed.
