i'm wondering how you live and what u do that allows you to sustain practice at that level

It is a fair question. The Dalai Lama describes himself as a 'simple monk', so don't expect any advanced practitioners to answer.  :)

What I can say is for example someone who lived in the same street as me and had done this three year retreat

supported himself by teaching full time and doing all the courses he could and also teaching dharma.

Is that the sort of thing you are asking?
