theravada monastery! Help please!
« on: July 02, 2013, 06:54:35 am »
Dear forum members!
i would like go to a buddhist monastery in the near future as a buddhist nun. i know Amaravati Monastery and i think it is a very good monastery. but i know it: they (the monastery) want two times i go to the monastery before i will live in the monastery. If i wanna be a female monk, they (the monastery) want i live two short times in the monastery because they want get to know me. after two times they adjudicate about i am living in the monastery as a female monk or no.
i have got a problem: maybe i can't go two times to the monastery because i have got work in my country and i don't want lost my work! i very need work. i need money.
i don't know informations about other monasteries. i just know informations about Amaravati. i would like know other monasteries who don't want i go to the monastery for two times before i will live in the monastery. i would like the monastery want just one time before i will live in the monastery.
i don't know two times is a buddhist tradition or no???? if two times is a tradition i think all monastery want i go to two times to the monastery before i will living in the monastery..... it would be a big problem. :(
thank you very much for the replies!

Dear lotus flower,

if your like to become a full ordinate Bhikkhuni, you would have a longer "prove" time and it is surely not easy to find a "nissaya" as a female monk is only allowed to take up one disciple after the other, but it's  sure no problem to ordain as novice.

You will find many information here: http://bhikkhuni.net/directory.html

And you don't need to worry. There is a long training time and there is even the possibility to re-ordain. So just try if it is good for you and after it, when this is your way, is enough time to let go of house, friends, home and work and all other you had. Maybe its also good to stay away form this very active places and famous places. Look for small and modest places. There are also male monasteries where you can live as a 10 Sila novice nun.
But just start to make some longer retreat first and check if you are really able to take this holly course.

Best wishes!

What is your language, I guess it would be good if you would study a little the Bhikkhuni rules before, or do you know them already?

The easy ways are a good sign for the wrong way and what ever is popular is not the special. As a woman not used to Asian tradition and not a good amount of merits in the back, I would not ordain in Asia. It's really not easy, but if you understand what all is about you will have no problems to walk your way out of problems.

i think Thailand isn't a bad way because Thailand is a buddhist country.

There is no such as a "Buddhist" country and in those countries, where Buddhism is used as religion (politic) there is most trouble with female ordination and as well as with female ordained. When you search for a buddhist place outside of your self, then you will turn around for a long time.
I guess you are very blue-eyed. Maybe you read the quote of Devarupa again.
I guess it's better when you fix the things where you are and find out what you like first.

you have got the truth. Asia isn't  good way.
Burma and Sri Lanka have got wars.... a lot of peoples are lost in that country.
Thailand is very warning because monasteries are in jungles or in forests. moskitos, snakes.... and the water isn't normally.
i think Europa is the good way.

Do you seek for a nice place or do you like to get rid of your kileasas? Theses are two different things. Maybe you book some holidays or look for a holiday pension. Are you really sure that you know what you are seeking for? Becoming a Bhikkhu means, not to care much about the environment as the trouble comes from within. If you like to have a nice time in a monastery every SEAsian country is ok. Just make a good donation to the Abbot and you will get what you want (in most of them). That will not work in Europe for example.

If you speak german, I can give you a good contact to a very knowlegde able Buddhist woman (8 Sila serious) who takes care of Bhikkunis in Germany as well as in Sri Lanka. She has much knoledge in regard Vinaya and uses to teach Bhikkhunis and Novices and most importand: She is a woman. Which is much better to talk to. So if you speak German, perfect.
Yes there is one German Bhikkhuni "monastery". An I am sure it might be a very good place. If you like the contacts just send me a PN.
