Deities and empowerments
« on: May 17, 2015, 01:36:28 pm »
Are there any deities that do not require an empowerment to practice?  Particularly Amitabha?

In Vajrayana, every diety, every practices, require empowerments from your Root Guru. Every mantra, mudras, visualizations require the empowerments, teachings from your Guru. Our attainment come and can only come from the Guru's and the precious lineage empowerment, blessings and the secret way. Lama Tsongkhapa emphasised on this. When one practises without his Root Guru's empowerment, it's against the samaya vows between the Guru and Disciple.

Of course, one can recite the name of Amithabha( eg. Chinese Mahayana Pure Land Sect)

However, when it comes to tantric practices. It is the most appropriate to receive say, Amitabha empowerment so as to recite Amitabha mantra, practice Amitabha mudra and His secret dharma way (according to what your Guru has taught)
