To repent for the bad karma, we have to generate the genuine regret deep from the heart, which is similar to the situation that we drink something poisonous without knowing. If we realize we have had something poisonous, we would be terrified and regret a lot. Similarly, we created lots of bad karma in the past, and although the karma has not led to retributions, we are very fearful since one day the bad karma will turn into retributions. Therefore, we feel regretful for what we did in the past. If we generate the regret in this way, our repenting would have the power of removing the bad karma. If we just think about it carelessly and chant 100-Syllable Mantra of Vajrasattva without attention, there are no results even if we have chanted the mantra many times.
